Debian 9 Stretch announced, Raspbian's future

Sun May 28, 2017 5:51 pm

Great news! :D

The release date of Debian 9 "Stretch" has been announced for June 17, and Release Candidate 4 is available for testing.

Debian 9 comes with kernel 4.9, which means we will get some exciting new stuff by default:
- a fully open Raspberry Pi 3D driver stack
- better HDMI hotplug detection for Pi2/3
- DPI panel support
- Raspberry Pi Zero support

It's just a short list with the things I noticed in the feature announcement on phoronix, so feel free to correct/update this list if you know more. :) If you want to try kernel 4.9, there's a thread related to kernel 4.9 testing, where you can report any issues you encounter.

The purpose of this thread is to talk about the next iteration of Raspbian. I'd like to know what is likely to be expected in Raspbian when the new version (based on Debian 9 Stretch) will be ready, and how else can we help apart from the kernel testing. :)

Cheers! :D

I wonder why there has not been Raspbian May image yet (4.9.xx kernel by default)

Good news indeed, and not the first topic to bring it.
But I must have missed something: kernel 4.9.
At least two of my Pi's are already running kernel 4.9 according to the output of uname: "Linux raspberrypi 4.9.24-v7+ #993 SMP Wed Apr 26 18:01:23 BST 2017 armv7l GNU/Linux".
Is that because of a apt-get dist-upgrade?

@buja: You're right. I just noticed that my RasPi Zero W is on 4.9:
Linux raspberrypi 4.9.24+ #993 Wed Apr 26 17:56:54 BST 2017 armv6l GNU/Linux
@fruitoftheloom: Thanks for pointing that out. I missed it, although I have to admit I only looked in this forum category because I assumed this is where the topic would be discussed. :)

Hi - are there already Raspbian lite images available for download which hold Debian9?

Not yet as has been discussed.

Though you can update a Raspbian Jessie Lite to Raspbian Stretch Lite.....

update your /etc/apt/sources.list replacing "jessie" with "stretch", then run apt-get update && apt-get upgrade ;)

They're the same thing. 4.9 is already shipped through the Raspberry Pi repo.

Contradictory information

I did apt-get upgrade on my weather station Pi (1B) and after a reboot it now runs kernel 4.9.24+
(edit: update changed to upgrade)
dolphs wrote:Hi - are there already Raspbian lite images available for download which hold Debian9?
No, there is no officially released Raspbian Stretch yet.
Raspbian follows Debian, the normal order of things is that after Debian has released its new stable version (9 Stretch), the Raspbian developers (Plugwash & friends?) update Raspbian with the new Debian packages and then release Raspbian Stretch.
Simple as this sounds, it's probably quite a bit of work, so it may take some time.

I'm sure it will be announced on this forum and the blog when Raspbian Stretch is available, followed by complaints that the server is not available due to massive downloads. ;)

update doesn't install anything new. You must have done an upgrade or dist-upgrade to get the new kernel.

Yes, you are right: apt-get upgrade (slip of the keyboard).

Indeed. Pretty much universally true when people make "URL-only" posts.
If this post appears in the wrong forums category, my apologies.

Neither is back-biting.

The answer is "no".

Had a spare SD card so I tried this for fun and wifi on the Pi Zero W stops working after a reboot.

If the W has the same Radio-Chipset as the Pi3 (which, IIRC, it has) you can try the following:

wget 'http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/p ... i4_all.deb'
sudo dpkg -i firmware-brcm80211_0.43+rpi4_all.deb

This will download the firmware files needed and afterwards your wifi should work again - at least it did on my Pi3 running Stretch (after a reboot)

Thanks that worked looks like it installs the wrong firmware in the upgrade.

Oh - and don't forget to block updating of the firmware blobs:

Code: Select all

apt-mark hold firmware-brcm80211

Return to “Raspbian”
