At yesterdays Manchester RaspberryJam, @thefraf demonstrated connecting to T'Internet via USB cable to his android phone. He was using Debian - is this feature available in Raspbian yet?

I did this with my N900. It registers as ttyACM0 and can be used with wvdial.

I don't think there is a general answer to this as different phones do tethering in different ways.

On my htc wildfire S with the USB tethering mode set to "windows" the phone appears as a usb network adaptor. Connecting is as simple as adding "iface usb0 inet dhcp" to /etc/network/interfaces and then doing ifup usb0.

Power may also be an issue with some phones (my wildfire S seemed ok on a quick test but I dunno what the polyswitches will do longer term).

Thanks plugwash!

I now have internets on my RPi. I added the line:
iface usb0 inet dhcp

to /etc/network/interfaces

and typed sudo ifup usb0 to get it working - HTC Legend
