Linux kernel 3.2 on Raspbian?

Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:58 pm

I see that version 3.2.27 is now the latest Raspberry Pi kernel version (the default branch in the Github repo is rpi-3.2.27). Is there a timeline for shipping kernel 3.2 with Raspbian?

I have the bootc 3.2 kernel working under armel wheezy, but armhf would be very useful for audio encoding, which is a component of the thing I'm building. I specifically need 3.2 for some newer video4linux features.

Thanks!

i've tried to use apt-get update, and apt-get upgrade.

These commands updates some packages.

I reboot, but still i have kernel 3.1.9 if i use "uname -a". How can i update kernel to version 3.2.x?
apt-get update and upgrade is not sufficent?

Thank you

It doesn't seem to appear in the available deb files for linux-latest: http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/po ... ux-latest/

Am I missing something?

have you run an rpi-update ? That's what upgrades the kernel.

You can check what was fixed in firmware, including kernel, libs and etc. on github https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/commits/master

I'm also new to RPi and am trying to update the kernel. I'm running raspbian but rpi-update seems not to be included, is this right? Do I have to install it from https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update ? is git-core required?

Last question, why a firmware update is required in order to update the kernel ? why aptitude update/upgrade doesn't upgrade the kernel as in other systems?

TIA!

apt-get update and apt-get upgrade do upgrade the kernel and firmware.

apt-get is restricted to versions of kernel/firmware considered "stable". So if testing the 3.2.27 kernel succeeds for most people, apt-get will eventually update to 3.2.27 as well.

There's also a "bleeding edge" repository for apt-get where you can get a more recent, but not necessarily more stable, version of kernel/firmware via apt-get. Just search through this forum, I think asb has posted instructions how to enable the bleeding-edge repository. That way, you can avoid rpi-update and potential conflicts with apt-get.

Return to “Raspbian”
