Change notes mention SD card cloning

Mon May 23, 2016 4:20 pm

Hi guys,
I noticed that a new feature in the 2016-05-10 version of Jessie is the ability to do a backup of it's own SD card, or so I read it from the release notes...

* SD Card Copier added (can be used to duplicate or back up the Pi)

Any fuller explanation around here somewhere? Is it part of NOOBS too?

It was mentioned in the Raspbian Update Blog

Thanks, FotL- that is quite some discussion; I'll have to go to the Blog more. So many posts, so little time!

From the blog....." It has been designed to work with Raspbian and NOOBS images" so l would assume it's part of both.

Works well when l've used it, even copies to smaller cards, assuming your files will fit :D

Thanks Gordon,
I prob'ly will feel dumb  about asking this question, but why is 1.9.1 NOOBS only 1 gig, whereas just the straight Raspian OS is over 1.3 gigs?

I ask because with the easier clone/backup now in place, I'm unclear about whether to stay with dual booting Raspian/Kodi or separate cards for each; this would affect 3 Pi2s and 2 Pi3s... the 'ancestry' of an SD card would stay clearer in my mind (I also have the lil 2.8 PiTFT's software hack to consider).

The raspbian image in NOOBS is the same but it is compressed using xz which results in a smaller size

Return to “Raspberry Pi OS”
