new Raspian 2016_04_10 SD copy tool: issues...

Sat May 14, 2016 12:14 pm

hi,

as reported in a different topic I have created a SD clone of my current internal SD card, featured by the new Raspian 2016_04_10 SD copy tool.
I now wanted to test in on a 2nd Pi (both ones are Pi 2).

update:

first check: the 2nd Pi is booting fine with it's proprietary SD card, having a Realtec WiFi stick plugged in.

then: shutdown, exchange SD card by the clone I created by the new SD clone program:
inserted the backup SD card into this 2nd Pi,
booting starts,
but then hangs up in the section

Code: Select all

144 RF Controller on usb-3f98000.usb-1.3/input3
(...) new highspeed usb device
(...) new usb device found
(...) new usb device strings
(...) product: 802.11,WLAN Adapter
(...) Manufacturer: Realtec
(...) SerialNumber 00e.....
(...) random: nonblocking pool is initialized
then nothing else any more.

exchanging that WiFi stick to another WLAN device (Edimax Wi-Fi which once was plugged to the 1st Pi) eventually didn't change anything:

also hangs up at the same line, by slightly different previous lines (depending on the different WiFi stick)

Code: Select all

(...) random: nonblocking pool is initialized
now what the heck....? :shock:

Those lines are not relevant. What's earlier in the log?

wow, well, a good question -
a huge pile of lines having rushed through...
do you want to know the section before?
Or a special one?
Can I pause the rushing lines during booting then somehow to check for special entries?
#define S sqrt(t+2*i*i)<2
#define F(a,b) for(a=0;a<b;++a)
float x,y,r,i,s,j,t,n;int main(){F(y,64){F(x,99){r=i=t=0;s=x/33-2;j=y/32-1;F(n,50&S){t=r*r-i*i;i=2*r*i+j;r=t+s;}if(S){PointOut(x,y);}}}for(;;);}

watching the boot sequence closely I shortly can observe 2 red lines rushing through, but impossible to read...

well, red lines might contain sort of error msg, as I assume... :roll:

how can I stop those scrolling lines during booting?
#define S sqrt(t+2*i*i)<2
#define F(a,b) for(a=0;a<b;++a)
float x,y,r,i,s,j,t,n;int main(){F(y,64){F(x,99){r=i=t=0;s=x/33-2;j=y/32-1;F(n,50&S){t=r*r-i*i;i=2*r*i+j;r=t+s;}if(S){PointOut(x,y);}}}for(;;);}

You don't have to. There are several log files in /var/log you can refer to: kern.log, messages, syslog. You'll have to prune through the log files though. They're huge and contain messages displayed on screen during previous boots.

There's also the dmesg command, although that only works on successful boot.

Pull the card, mount it in your USB SDCard reader, use your rescue system to read it.

what is a rescue system?
wouldn't it 1st of all be easier to read the red lines?
As they are thrown to the screen - how to stop them to be read?

as the new copy procedure is provided by the devs I guess there will be more users to run into those issues, and they hopefully will have better skills to solve that issue :-/

Another SDCard that's bootable to a linux command prompt. You mean you don't have a backup/rescue system.

Everyone who owns a raspberry pi should have three SDCard and a USB reader. One that its booted from, one that's a backup of that card and one that's a simple Raspbian card to use as a rescue system.

ah, you mean just an older SD card?
yes, I have that.

I will mount the Linux partition to media/pi/sdx_root

can you tell me the path to the log file?

Sighs... you missed the point. Yes you used the SD card copier to create it, but you also used a separate card reader to make the non-working backup, right? DougieLawson gave away the spoiler after I posted. That should have already given you the clue what to do in order to get the log file(s) from the non-working backup. ;)

sigh... yes, as you may have meanwhile read I perhaps understood what he meant... :-/
don't be so ironic, I am just a bloody beginner!

Anyway, as there are millions of lines thrown to the screen during booting-
what sense do they have if they vanish so quickly that they couldn't at least be read by stopping the lines scrolling intermediately ? :roll: :roll: :roll:

edit:
now where is the path to that log file? :geek:

next problem:

When I insert the SD clone to a USB reader then I can find just /dev/sda but no sda1, sda2,....sda7

ejected and replugged it: no change.
restarted, replugged: no change.

where are the missing partitions?

No, I think it's something else.

I haven't read the ramblings in this thread, but is it a Noobs card or an image you copied? An image install will only have two partitions.

a Noobs card, but when I first checked the copy on my original Pi there have been created and written 5 partitions , and then 5 partitions have been detected in /dev:
sda1, sda2, sda5, sda6, sda7.
and additionally sda.

Now after some attempts to boot from that SD clone there is only sda listed, the rest has vanished.

Can you see them with

yes!

NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
mmcblk0     179:0    0 28,9G  0 disk

└─mmcblk0p7 179:7    0 27,7G  0 part /
but now not even a sda file in /dev any more -
what a mess!

That's the card in the SD card slot.

Some card readers don't support hot-swapping the SD card.
You either need to reboot or remove / insert the USB card reader (with the SD card already inserted).

why does then lsblk work and no sda* listed?
nevertheless,
also after reboot with inserted USB reader no sda* at all

edit - now I understand, it's the internal SD listed, I did not understand that cryptic lsblk message.
update -
just observed that the NEW (!!) USB card reader is defective. Just used for 3 days, now it also can't be detected by Windows any more ("unknown USB device").
Hell, how I hate that.
