Playing shop bought DVDs on Pi3 WiFi

Sun Mar 06, 2016 7:24 am

I'm using Raspbian 26th Feb 2016 on the latest and greatest Pi 3 with WiFi.

How do I play it ? My old friend 'VLC' seems reluctant to do anything.

I've got a trusted external USB DVD burner attached but currently I've no idea as what to do next.

There seems to be a divide between what works out of the box and what needs tweaking to get going ?

Maybe its just me being a bit thick....

Any thoughts very very welcome....

Describe your problems rather than spouting your opinions and folks may be better able to help resolve the struggles you're having. Your first post is just noise.

It think the easiest option would be an Kodi distro
which does include libdvdcss.

But i guess software MPEG2 decoding might be fast enough on
the Pi3 ? Pethaps you just need to install libdvdcss to make
VLC do its job ?

Is there any way to watch a video with the Pi 3 Wi ?

Another question:- Does any one know what the current status of Codecs are for the Pi ?

For many years it was easy to watch a film on a PC. Now it seems quite difficult. I ask this question as it seems (to me) particularly relevant to the Pi.

A puzzled,

Thank you for your response.

You probably need the MPEG-2 license key
http://swag.raspberrypi.org/collections ... icense-key

You WILL need an external USB CDROM/DVD drive.

The foundation has invested a lot of money
and time to make the Pi experience more PC-like but
there are still things to be done.

Nobody can say for sure if you need the licenses. The Pi3
should be fast enough to software decode MPEG2 , but
you will never know unless you try VLC with SD MPEG2 material.

Furthermore VLC can not make use of the license/acceleration
anyway.

The Pi3 is fast enough to easily handle software decode of MPEG-2 without needing the hardware CODEC licences.

Should be ok.

See previous comments about libdvdcss2 and software that supports it.

You may want to check this link :

Note that even MPlayer does not make use of the license ,
so i don't know why the article advises to buy it.

Many thanks for responding.
I tried it without buying the License and it didn't work for me.
As Windows doesn't need a License, I really wonder whats going on. Especially as Mint 17.3 has two versions one without Codecs and the other with Codecs which works fine. Off Topic but it will be very interesting How the forthcoming Ubuntu 16.04 deals with it.

I find it all very strange indeed. I think I'll leave this problem alone and come back in 3 to 6 months. By then some solution may have been found and appear in an update to Raspbian. (I really like Raspbian as its most elegant in many ways.)

That's because part of the price for Windows includes a licence, you get one (and have paid for it in hidden costs) whether you need one or not.

As said , the license is only needed for hardware decoding -
if software decoding is enough for you and it's legal in
your jurisdiction go ahead without it. The foundation
seems to value it's relationship with the MPEG LA
even if they operate from the UK.
