Trouble with sharing my wireless internet connection.

Tue Aug 07, 2012 7:00 am

I am using a laptop with Windows 7 to share my internet connection with my Raspberry Pi. It was working with the old wheezy image plug and play and no config. Now with Raspbian R1 and R3 I can't seem to get it working again.

My setup is wireless set to shared via lan on my Windows laptop. I am using a crossover cable to my Raspberry Pi. I have messed with every network thing I can think of..., because I am still learning Debian (I am used to CentOS, dang school...) I am unsure of what to do.

I have tried the things on this site http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration and not much help. I try apt-get update && dist-upgrade and all I get is errors all the way down.

I have tried deleting all the lines from 70-persistent-net.rules and I tried deleting the file. I also tried sudo vi etc/network/interfaces and added auto eth0 blah blah blah.

Soooooooo ya I need some help with either the Windows side or Raspbian anybody that can help would be awesome. :)

Edit: Also tried the change eth0 to eth1 and still the same problem...

Have you tried a different cable? I had a similar problem and it turned out the cable just wasnt working even though it worked fine with everything else before I tried it in my Pi.

No I haven't tried that yet as I don't have another crossover cable. I don't really think I could of ruined it but their is always that possibility. I am just trying to narrow down what it could be. I see all the leds blink on my PC's lan and Raspberry Pi so I am just gonna assume it has a connection, but either my PC or the Pi is messing it up.

I just know it worked on the older image and not on this one.

I am gonna try your idea though just need to buy another cord.

You don't need a crossover cable. The NIC on the RPi (and most modern computers) is auto-sensing, therefore you can use straight or crossover cables.

Never heard of that before, but you learn something new everyday. :) Well I can try it, I have other normal lan cables. I will post here if it works or doesn't.

hostname -I
192.168.xxx.xxx
ifconfig
Not sure what you want me to post but it shows the address, bcast, and mask. RX packets 68 TX packets 64 everything else is 0.
route
Shows default and my ip address nothing else.
ping 8.8.8.8
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8 thats all.

You seem to be getting a valid IP address from somewhere.

It is not clear which gateway you are using. Are you sure that ifconfig does not show a gateway address?

Apologies for the questions, but it is very difficult working blind.

Try the commands
sudo ifdown eth0
sudo ifup eth0

After the ifup command, you should see DHCPDISCOVER and DHCPOFFER messages. Post the contents of the DHCPOFFER messages.

The gateway shows up as my ip address of the laptop.

Contents of the DHCPOFFER messages is my laptops ip address.

It acts as if its connected but I fail to get anything from the internet...

Try the command
ping 8.8.8.8
It was very unclear from your answer above if this succeeded or failed.

Try pinging your laptop, let us know if this succeeds or fails.

Please post exactly the response to the route command.
