The top and bottom panels are Tint2 panels. I customized the Tint2 panels to my liking to achieve this look. The notifications displayed on the desktop are from xfce4-notifyd. I want to be notified of things such as disconnection from the Internet, or Raspberry Pi is getting hot, or other notifications thrown by Raspbian Lite. Let's see the memory usage of my custom desktop environment:
Dear GhostRaider a VERY BIG THANK YOU! I register here mainly to give you this. I know that there is a big amount of time invested into creating quality content and than (1) to share it (for free) and on the comunity board and (2) to also support the others!

I have also a selfish request: would you share the openbox / tint2 configuration? For the bottom dock/panel I pretty much know what to do, but I am dead curious of how you have set up the top panel. :ugeek:

p.s. to all of you that just requesting stuff, stop for one second and appreciate. And here I mean, take 1 minute and thank the man who worked before (directly) asking for something!

Tint2 gives you the ability to have multiple panels. So one panel can go on the left, then in the middle, and then the right. So while it looks like its a single panel, its just 3 panels on top. Hope that helps! ;)

I used this guide last year to set up a Pi with a customised xfce desktop, and it was AMAZING, many many thanks. However I have recently come to set up another Pi, came back to this page only to find it's been edited and all the juicy customisation help has gone :( most disappointed...

Hello!

I hope i am right here with my Problem:

I have build a Script to start Chromium in Openbox with Tint2 - it should used for working at Home and build a connection to our Company via Citrix!

In Jessie, all went fine, worked like a charme, now i have upgraded to Stretch (building the Environment complete new) and now Chromium opens the .ica Files (Citrix start files) in Leafpad instead of Citrix Receiver...

I unterstand the difference between an desktop environment and Openbox - Chromium use here xdg-open to claim the mime-types...

What have i done?

Code: Select all

xdg-mime default wfica.desktop application/x-ica
no change! then i have created HOME/.local/share/applications/defaults.list with the correct binding, tried the solutions from here: https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index. ... 45173.html

but nothing, Chromium opens the File in Leafpad... and now its going to be strange: if i start pcmanfm in the same session in openbox the .ica files have the correct binding and wenn i double click them, the Citrix App opens

Maybe its a bug in Stretch? As i said - in Jessie there was no problem, the correct binding was already there out of the box!

Perhaps anyone have an Idea what to do, or have that done already ;)
Thanks!

Sorry for my English, i am from Austria and i write not often in English

Thanks

This guide is awesome, but it would be nice if it could be expanded with instructions to activate OpenGL acceleration.

Installing

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr libgl1-mesa-dri
and activating the OpenGL driver in raspi-config still does NOT work... someting is missing.

Any hint?
Thanks

Installed everything fine, first login of xfce using xstart it asked me to create default panels etc, I said yes, restarted, when I login (pi/raspberry) it says no running instance of xfce4-panel was found, start? I hit yes, the desktop loads fine, but it says modifying the panel is not allowed running in 'kiosk mode' ? Thanks

I mostly cover GUI related things in the original thread instead of hardware. But yes, I've had the exact same problem that you have when you use NetworkManager with XFCE. The way I fix this issue is to edit "/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf" and set managed=true so that NetworkManager takes over WiFi and Ethernet. Then I just run the command "sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" so that WiFi goes into the UP state. Finally I edit "/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf" and delete everything inside it. After a restart, NetworkManager now shows the WiFi networks in the system tray.
Will the above settings work on Raspbian Stretch Lite LXDE? I tried it and wifi works, but ethernet said "device not managed". Can you please shed some light here.

Very nice guide! Immediately bookmarked. I have a small question related to the GUI: I’m running RPD desktop on standard Raspbian. I accidentally selected the Preferences setting to load defaults for large screens. Now the whole UI is messed up with ugly icons. Even selecting medium or small screens did not made the UI come back to its default nice theme. Any idea on what to do to bring back the original? It was very nice and now it looks very bad. Thanks for your help.

obconf seems to be ok now after latest update/upgrade

however lxappearance does not work at the moment leading to difficulties in setting gtk theme and icon theme etc. A possible workround may be to edit the configuration files directly using any text editor. The relevant files are ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf and~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. It seems that both must be modified identically

I fixed lxappearance by removing the package lxappearance-obconf

Thanks Frederk - that worked. I hope the foundation arrange for lxappearance-obconf plug-in to be fixed (like obconf) so that the integrity of LXDE metapackage is restored !

Advanced - X11 Forwarding (Remote Applications)
I don't seem to be able to connect to the pi with Mobaxterm. I followed all instructions, including installing the XFCE GUI. But Mobaxterm gives the error 'X11-forwarding : ✘ (disabled or not supported by server)'. I googled the problem and tried all remedies found, but to no avail. Checked that xinit is run on the pi, X11forwarding enabled in the ssh & sshd configs in the pi and that .Xauthority is present in the used home. What to do?

Strange. A possibility would be that the service is disabled. Try

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl enable sshd.socket
in Terminal and restart and try to connect again.

The command
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xserver-xorg
seems to be out of date. Should I install alternative "xserver-xorg-core"?
Does I need further installations?

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xinit
can't also be found :(

Seems to work fine on my Raspberry Pi with Raspbian Stretch. A screenshot would help to see what the issue is.

Brill GhostRaider, thank you so much for this post!

I also want bring it out there that KDE plasma also works with this method. It also works with the animations.

It is slightly sluggish on the 3B+, so only try on older models at your own risk.

Also, why do we need xorg? It worked just fine when I just install xinit.

No need for lightDM on plasma.

I didn't include KDE since the problem with it is that it doesn't run well on Raspberry Pi, but its possible to install.

If you install xinit first, then it will automatically install xorg components. If you do it the other way, xinit will not be installed.

Doesn't run well? I thought it ran fine.

Anyway, thats also helpful to know, that xinit comes with xorg.

For those who are wondering how to install KDE plasma, the command is:

$ sudo apt install kde-standard

comes with sddm, so no need for lightDM.

If you turn the time length of animations to instant it's not so bad.

Buster will ship gnome/wayland by default, so can we have guide for this(Pi4)?
and, maybe sway(i3) build tutorial?
