ok got the pi yesterday bought the appropriate keyboard and sd card from maplins where al the staff have pi's and know what works so seemed like good advice. Put Rasprian on the card and started up the pi all was fine and it logged in to what I guess is a trial screen so we got to play games and look around a bit. When we then tuned off and restarted it asked for log in accepted pi and then wouldnt accept the password by which I mean there was no flickering or anything but when we clicked return it said incorrect log in. After several attempts the kernel panicked and we had to format the disk re-download rasprian on to it and start again. Went back to Maplins got the microsoft keyboard all the staff are using and also changed the power supply just in case. The result was exactly the same initially it loads then when turned off and rebooted asks for the log in accepts pi and then wont let me type the password. Not sure what to try now any help appreciated.

What power supply are you using? The minimum should be at least 700mA, but more the better.

5v 1000a it says on the plug, it is a mp5 charger, was using my blackberry charger but I cant read the tiny writing on that. I did try to get a new one today just in case but maplins are waiting for stock and amazon will take a few days.

The password should be
raspberry
The password will be invisible, so type it carefully.

I assume that's 5v 1000mA (or 1A). That should be enough.
Do you have caps-lock pressed? It should be off. You probably don't, but its always worth checking.
How are you shutting down the pi? Pulling the plug while its writing to the SD card can sometimes cause corruption.
Are you putting in the right password? raspberry, not strawberry.
Multiple incorrect logins should not cause a kernel panic. Have you tried a different SD card?
I'm running out of the obvious things to try.

Karl.

I got a raspberry pi and the bumper pack and it still won't let me type the password in even though I can type the login in!
What should I do should I go somewhere like maplin?

The password will not be visible as you type and no characters will echo to indicate you are typing the password. If the 'Enter' key works, the other characters should also be working.
Are you using the official Raspbian "wheezy" download from
Downloads ? This starts up with a configuration menu to allow you to complete set up of the SD card. Follow the
Quick Start Guide to get up and running.
Good luck and enjoy!

try typing in raspberry where it is still shown, so you can see all letter come through as they should.
