Raspian Jesse and WiFi Config

Sat Dec 05, 2015 3:40 pm

Am I being very dumb but how do you get to install a WiFi Dongle onto the Zero. Having internet would be really nice !

A year or two on the GUI was a most helpful application /'WiFi Config' but it seems to have escaped !

A most puzzled but otherwise Pi Zero is brilliant !

Has anyone got WiFi running on the Pi Zero yet ?

Most interested to hear what you did to achieve that. And where you got your dongle from.

I now have a raspberry Pi zero with raspian Jesse installed on a 16GB Class 10 micro SD card,

Its boots up fine but as I want WiFi I bought a mini dongle from Pi Swag and inserted it.

It has arrived in its container, so I've plugged it in to a Powered 7way port which runs directed off the Pi,

and tried Ephinany out .

Lo nothing on the WiFi side works on boot up !

Every else does.

What do I do next?

A very frustrated,

Nice link, but the link says ". If you look towards the right-hand end of the menu bar, there is now a network icon. "

I can't even find that on Jesse desktop....

I'm I'll kick myself when someone points it out to me.

I'm still stuck....

Many thanks for responding...

The WiFi Dongle I've got is the one with a while Raspberry logo on the side of it.

So How do I associate that with my wireless router..... as I've not suceeded in the first step yet...

Many many thanks !

That fixed the problem/nightmare I was having !

The dongle I used was the Wi-Pi from element14 (A part of Farnell based in the UK)

That diagram and your clear instructions did it for me !

My success with the 3 different Wi Fi Dongles was a one off event.

I fear something is broken.

I go to the ikon of two TV sets over lapping and see this:

'WiFFi Networks(dhcpcdui) Settings'

Clicking on that gives me:-
'Network Preerences

Configure Interface (with a tick)
(Just a tick) '

No idea what to do next.

When a dongle is in the USB Hub and put mouse on the TV ilkon I get

'wlan0: not associated'

with no WiFi dongle I get

'departed'

Any ideas as I'm tearing my hair out here.

Thinking of going back to RPi B +, but I don't want to a RPi Zero has potentially a great fute.

Any thoughts very welcome !

A very very puzzled

Put the mouse pointer on the network icon and click the left mouse button and you should get a list of wifi networks the wifi can see. Select the wifi you want to connect to and it should ask for the password.

Or look here https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/anothe ... ce-update/

Yes. My zero is connected with an official raspberry dongle (using a microUSB to USB shim). Total cost £10.50 from PiMoRoNi,

Many thanks for the responses.

If the Dongles have been damaged by the Hub over volting then That would explain a lot, but having printed out all 25 pages recommended in a link very kindly posted, I think going for all the updates might fix the problem.

what has spooked me that I did get all the WiFi dongles to work ! But just once ! It likes to think about certain parts of the process and I try to be very patient !

As the prospect of getting another Zero before Xmas may also be zero..... that does leave me with very restricted options....

Looks like I can just poke around and see what I stumble into..

Dies Jesse work on the B+ and does Wheezy work on a Zero ?

Clutching a straws here...

Many thanks for responding !

Jessie works on every type of Raspberry Pi.
Wheezy would need sudo rpi-update run to get it Zero ready and if NOOBS then you'd also need to do the NOOBS update waltz.

Sounds like I may have a corrupt version of Jesse ! I'm using win32DiskInstaller on W7, but I two error flags on the way to coming up and working.

It does load fine on the Zero but using raspi-congig does seem to upset it especially when I 'sudo halt' from the terminal.

Shame there is no direct equivalent on Linux.

Many thanks for responding.

Many thanks for the ideas and Links.

I'll dig out some the older RPi's I've got and see What I can achieve.

Time is against me this week, so hope to have some sort of success over the week end,

Many thanks to all,

So far so good. Got the Pi Zero WiFi running.

Now the fix turned out to be 'The USB Hub' !

I tried every thing like testing all 3 WiFi dongles on a Ubuntu 14.04 DeskTop.. all worked.

Changed some if the leads...

Found a different computer with W7 on it to create the Sdcard with OS. Didn't trust my bown to 100% clean install...

Now what worked on the Zero was a Belkin F5D7050 WiFi and a using 4 port USB Hub F5U234 rev.3 Powered Hub.

It was a bit fussy about which ports you plug what into. Going from the power input power lead I used mouse first then keyboard then WiFi then powered the Pi Zero from the 4th port.

The Belkin WiFi was a bit sensitive to mating with the USB port but waggling until the Hub's led came on made it easy to see when it was usable.

Now all of this was 'shades of non compatible 7 port Powered Hubs on the original Pi, thats why I have the Benkin Hubs.

The pi zero must have a Hub ! so I'd be very interest in which 7 port hub successfully works with a Pi Zero !

I'd greatly appreciated a post from anyone who uses a 7 port hub on a zero and where they got it from and the model of the Hub. I'm in the UK. I'd like to replace the Benkin Hub asap !

Many thanks for all the support I've received from members of this Forum.

The Benkin WiFi Dongle kept shutting down after about 3 minutes, so I replaced it with one from element 14 (Farnell UK)

which worked fine.
