Thank you for your answer. With that command, the XBMC logo appears, after that I can see the default XBMC background (without any buttons yet) for a second before the console appears again. I have tried a few times without success.

Hi,

i think the problem is, that you haven´t setup the correct memory split. You have to set 128MB/128MB in the raspi-config menu.
Type:

Code: Select all

sudo raspi-config
choose "memory_split" and select the proper menu entry and reboot.
After that xbmc should work as aspected :) Hopefully

I was missing the memory split, yes. Sadly, after that I tried to run XBMC again wit the same command and I got the same results again: XBMC logo, background image, return to console.

Can you post or upload your tempory xbmc log file? Its located under your

Code: Select all

home/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log
or

Code: Select all

/root/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log
. It may help to handle your problem....

You can download the xbmc package by following this link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12601231/Raspi/ ... _armhf.deb
You may have to install the following libraries:

sudo apt-get install libplist1 libmicrohttpd10 libtinyxml2.6.2 libyajl2 libssh-4 libmysqlclient18 liblzo2-2 libfribidi0
nIerSify is this the current version you have available? Weekend is approaching .... will have some time to play. I don't use NFS for my NAS shares but I can switch that around to test. I don't have any way to use CEC though.

Might start early tonight instead of waiting for Sat.

Hi,

the xbmc version with cec is the latest one i have compiled. I have tried to compile other repositories than this:https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc-rbp.git, but i had no success yet. At the weekend i will try to compile a newer version of xbmc.

Because the developers haven´t make any big changes in the source code you can also use the version from 20120905. Its the same as the latest version, the only difference is libcec. :)

Just did a quick try and it still won't play any of my ISO's.... I also tried to play the same MP4 files that omxplayer successfully plays and it doesn't do anything... It looks like it is playing, but nothing is showing on the screen. If I use pause or fast forward, you see the control pop up on the screen top right, and it is moving, but nothing is on the screen picture wise nor is there any sound.

omxplayer plays those files without any issues.

Will spend more time on this including gathering log files tomorrow (today actually).

**UPDATE** actually, omxplayer no longer displays on the screen either.... I can however hear the movie playing, just no video. hmmmm... firmware update problem maybe??

For those who are facing some problems with my current xbmc build.
Please post ur upload your xbmc.log ("/root/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log"). This will help to figure out what the problem is.

Make sure that you use the official raspian-wheezy image.
- Update your systems with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade -y
.
- Select the correct memory split (128/128)
- Start xbmc with
sudo /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc.bin
- Check if all required libraries are installed
- xbmc don´t need x. It uses gles. I don´t know what happens if you try to start xbmc out of x

If it´s still not working, i can create a complete image of a fresh raspian installation with xbmc and upload it. :D

That was quite helpful. It seems that I was missing some libraries, and that it complained about libcec. Installing all libraries and removing libcec1 solved my problems. It is working now, thank you for all the help! :)

It seems that the screen does not fit my TV, though... a small part of the borders would be "outside" the screen. The same thing happens with Raspbian's default LXDE and even the console, so it is probably a general issue of my installation.

Great that it works for you now ;)

To make xbmc fit to your screen you can correct the settings under apprearance in the main menu.
There is a option to reduce the size of the current selected skin. I have to use -4% if im not mistaking.

I can´t look it up right now, because i am setting up a fresh raspbian image with a preinstalled xbmc for sharing it.

P.S if you want to use cec you can install the libcec package, which is listed on my site. (Currently not available, because it is hosted on my pi :D). Otherwise you can ignore the warning in the log file :)

Thanks, that solved my screen issues. I don't need libcec, so no need to worry about it. Everything seems to work nicely in XBMC now, the only thing I'm missing now is a way to start it automatically on login that does not mess up remote ssh login as just adding the startup command to .bashrc does. Any ideas with regard to this?

Now that I finally have everything working as I wanted I will probably not change my media center image, but if I decide to update it in the future I'll try your raspbian image first. Are you planning to strip it from all unneeded packages too?

Its the official raspbian wheezy image, which can be found by following this link: http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads. The only thing i have installed were the libraries needed by xbmc and xbmc itself of course . I have disabled the option to boot into x desktop after starting the raspberry pi.
terkhen wrote: Everything seems to work nicely in XBMC now, the only thing I'm missing now is a way to start it automatically on login that does not mess up remote ssh login as just adding the startup command to .bashrc does. Any ideas with regard to this?
I was facing the same problem. One thing i have tried is to start xbmc automatically on boot, which worked quite well.
To autostart xbmc on boot:
- sudo nano /etc/init.d/xbmc
- copy the script on my blog in this file
- save it, then: chmod +x xbmc
- sudo update-rc.d xbmc defaults

The last command will create symbolic links in all run levels to this script.
If you boot your raspberry pi, xbmc will start automatically.
The problem was, that i have a lot of other services running (pyLoad, flatpress for my blog, samba etc.) So i wanted to save the system resources until i really wanted to watch something on xbmc etc.At the moment i am writing a client, server application for android in order to start xbmc via android app. This works quite well but does need alot of further development. I posted the features of this application on my blog. Unfortunately this post is in german right now. I will translate all the previous posts to english...

so what exactly are we looking for in the log file?

I find the installed xbmc binary to be way slower than the raspbmc distro. The scrolling text on the bottom lags and is choppy, and any movie file played is the same. Choppy. Interface is choppy, everything choppy. :-( And I get no sound (edit: sound now fixed). Settings it set for HDMI (which is correct). omxplayer -o hdmi from a command line plays the files fine and with sound. Pi is on 128/128 split.

EDIT: Sound works (by changing to 2.0 instead of capable receivers), but still everything is choppy.

Is that really the problem for choppiness? (although I installed the libcec fromhttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/12601231/libcec/libcec_1.8.0-1_armhf.deb so that doesnt help?)

This ist not the problem because most of your videos are chooping. Basically you can ignore this warning in the log. It occours because the libcec library is not installed. I will check if my package fixes this problem.

Edit:
I checked it and it came out that, in case you have installed the libcec package, you have not installed the package correctly, or you missing some libraries. libcec need liblockdev1 in order to work properly. I´ve installed it on fresh raspbian installation and was able to controle my xbmc with my remote tv controle. Check if you have installed libcec with

Code: Select all

sudo dpgk -i libcec_1.8.0-1_armhf.deb
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install liblockdev1

Appreciate the quick response.

I do have raspbmc working on another sd card, and for example, in raspbmc, if i go to the summary information, it gives me anywhere from 30 to 45 fps. And movies and everything plays perfect.

If i run xbmc.bin under raspian, the summary information is max 15 fps, the the choppiness in videos appears.

weird eh.

I think Im going to through all the settings on raspxbmc, write them down, and make sure they are the same in raspian.

ahh well, half the fun of getting things working is problems and fixing them. ;)

It is the official raspbian image which can be found here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads
You can download the image by following this link on my http://blog-selfprogramming.dyndns.org/ ... /comments/.

Its a clean installtion with xbmc (airplay, nfs, libcec, dvdcss, optical-drive support) libcec.
It is configured to start xbmc on boot. :D

Suggestion:

Could you implement some kind of boot loader that lets you choose either to startx or xbmc, intead of just booting into xbmc?

I want to try to use both "operating systems" off 1 SD card if I can. Berryboot seems to break stuff, specifically my wifi.

Thanks for sharing this, this version of xmbc works as expected and no stuttering, how do you remove xbmc from bootup? Edit: nm, its /etc/init.d/xbmc for those who are curious (was checking .bashrc or /etc/rc.local)

I couldnt get nfs to work (it doesnt even prompt for a path? is that normal for nfs in xbmc?) Not a big deal, got samba shares, and those do work.

so no idea what was wrong with my raspbian install, who cares, yours works. lol. good enough. :)

Might want to add something like > /dev/null 2>/dev/null to the xbmc init script, as if errors pop up, youre going to get text on the screen which can show up during playback.

whoops, wish I could edit, but I just added nfs shares manually, and its working.

Still get a couple of 'stutters' at the beginning of playback, I assume thats probably due to slower caching over the network.

I would still prefer it not boot automatically, but rather sit at a menu that lets you boot into Rasbian or XBMC, is this possible?

I am working on trying to see if i can get the packagaes to work, currently it just shows the logo then goes to the black screen where it shuts my tv off. I need to verify ram setting, but im fairly sure it was on 128.

I confirmed its not working with the 128 split.

I install the libraries as well

sudo apt-get install libplist1 libmicrohttpd10 libtinyxml2.6.2 libyajl2 libssh-4 libmysqlclient18 liblzo2-2 libfribidi0

When i launch it from the command line, without starting x, i see the logo, and the wallpaper for a second, then shuts the pi off.

Return to “Raspbian”
