I'm not a big fan of forums, but as far as I can tell there is no mailing list for Raspbian yet. Anyone interested?

I find mailing lists more handy too, so +1 from me. But i believe it would have to be official one and used by main developers to make sense.

After this week I'm a bit burned out, but I'll see what I can put together early next week.

Can someone recommend a good provider for email lists -- hopefully one that provides full archives that can be easily searched. I know some projects use Yahoo, but I don't know if they are the best provider of that service.

I've had reasonably good experiences with googlegroups and it also supports an "archive only" mode where the list is hosted somewhere else (in case the list is ever moved somewhere else).

Are you sure this is such a good idea? I would say either mailing list or forum but not both. IMO having both would just make it harder to find information.

Maybe a developers rather than a users mailing list would make sense?

You bring up a very good point. I would like to see other feedback in this thread.

Yes, I initially held off replying. Perhaps the initial question should have been: Any interest, yes or no? and maybe a link to an explanation/example of mailing lists.

My gut feeling is that the majority of forum users would not be comfortable using a mailing list.

For better or worse, it looks like there are at least a minority of other people more comfortable using mailing lists. :|

There's probably room for distro specific mailing lists for people like me interested in developing support documentation if only to flag up new versions.

Like it was 5 days before I happend upon the new Wheezy image and was able to start testing to see if the Noob support pages on the wiki still held true for the new version, as it is I've found some issues and I've posted but I can see the advantage in a mailing list to flag updates during development.

I can also see an advantage in a feedback address (note not an adress for answers) so we can post specific heads up mail for those issuing distro images.

Hi amp,

If there is to be a mailing list I would like to see it focused on a list of given topics, if at all possible. At the moment here the forum is becoming a free for all with important postings being pushed further and further down the list due to to very high postings.

It is good the forum is busy but there is a need for sub sections and a degree of moderation. A targeted mailing list could be very useful, I just wouldn't like to see it descend in to the free for all of the current forum. What topics/discussion points do you feel would be appropriate for the mailing list?

Best regards,

John

If there's a mailing list in addition to the forum, I would suggest it is raspbian-dev mailing list for discussion and fixing of package build issues, improving the build setup etc etc. Forums for user support.

Are unofficial ports allowed to be added to here:

http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/subscribe#ports

- I thought it might assist getting the list some visibility to the Debian crowd .... ?

Would totally get on a mailing list. I find this forum (and most BB-style forums) very difficult to follow and Google Groups is better for some kinds of communication. I also find sites like StackExchange better for some questions and answers, partly because they are well-indexed by Google.

I'll bounce this off plugwash as he's a Debian developer. I think I know what the answer will be, but it won't hurt to at least ask.

AFAIK, ports that have no plans to be included in Debian proper will probably not get a debian- mailing list, but I think an alioth.debian.org project would be approved (that would include VCS, project management tools, mailing lists, forums, etc.).

Plugwash is looking into Alioth. Hopefully he'll have an answer back within a few days.

So has this progressed, and can we hope to see a list soon ?
I for one find it much easier and quicker to skim through email and delete any unwanted stuff, than to have to wade through a forum, and having to wait for each page to load when I move from one thread to another.

I have created two mailing lists, one for development and one for mirror operators.

I also find email quicker to skim through. I wrote a python library which screen-scrapes various forums and sends the posts to me as email. Of course, if if want to make a post myself then I still need to log in to the forum, but 99% of the time I'm lurking. There are several rough edges but it works well enough for me. I could make this available if anyone else is interested.
