I don't see any packages related to freenx in any of the Debian distributions using the search tools available here:

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

Does freenx go under a different name?

http://www.nomachine.com/

FreeNX is an RDP (as in MS's Remote Desktop Protocol) client and server for Linux. Main advantage is you can use Windows' RDP client to control a Linux box, and I find RDP a lot nicer than VNC (vector vs bitmap, I think).

I found a source for FreeNX packages at the following URL:

http://freenx.berlios.de/download.php

I was hoping to obtain the source code for the Debian packages and rebuild them for Raspbian. Unfortunately, the link to the Debian packages appears to be broken and it doesn't appear than there have been any newer releases of FreeNX in four years. It looks like the project may have been abandoned which is probably why the packages aren't in the Debian repository.

Perhaps someone could verify this. Or, perhaps point me towards the source for new FreeNX Debian packages and I'll attempt to build them within Raspbian and put them into our repository.

The other alternative is to see if the source code for the Nomachine versions of the packages are available.

This website describes how to install it:

http://computingplugs.com/index.php/Ins ... Components

But I did not get it to work yet, it seems to connect but then fails without a decent warning.

During the installation nxcompext also fails to compile, presumably causing the problem.
I think it has something to do with the arm architecture but I'm not entirely sure.

An extensive web-search revealed nothing, but I'm still hoping,...

Ok, I got it up and running.

I think the main problem where the user rights on the /usr/NX folder. Make sure all the files and folders in there belong to nx:nx

Once this was sorted I was able to connect.

Be sure to use the OpenNX client to connect to the pi. The standard NX-client does not render any text. Except in dillo for some reason...

Hello Valensy,
can you describe how to compile a freenx (or the guide you follow to compile it) and exactly where was the permissions problems?

Thanks

To get the free nx server runnign with the official nx client (tested w v3.5.0-9) you'll need to do a few settings on the client side and make one change on the server side from the instructions at the wiki (http://www.tiaowiki.com/w/Install_NX_Se ... spberry_Pi )

The server side fix solves the no text problem mentioned by Velensy and is to add a line to the node.conf file in /usr/NX/etc/

sudo vi /usr/NX/etc/node.conf
page down or seach for commented out lines with
AGENT_EXTRA_OPTIONS_X=something
Add a new line (or overwrite one) as follows:

Code: Select all

AGENT_EXTRA_OPTIONS_X="-norender"
Now on the client side you'll need to configure some customer settings
Set the Desktop to "Unix" and "Custom" and the click on Settings...

In the settings dialog set the Application to "Run the following command" and put

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/lxsession -s LXDE -e LXDE

in the textbox
Hit OK, then set the speed as you please (e.g. LAN) and likewise the Display size and hit save

Then log in.

Thanks, that was the solution for my problem I was searching for!! (the extra added line in node.conf. Here it also starts with the startlxde command)

Although the Wiki you mentioned is very helpfull to install NX server, to run the patch there, also add --ignore-whitespace when running the patchfile will fix the 606 error. It would be great if someone could modify the wiki with this information to have a perfect instruction page :)

For now, I only have the freenx server running correctly for 1 hour, performance isn't that bad compared to an old P3 900mhz laptop which I use right now.

Hello people. I installed FreeNX as instructed in http://www.tiaowiki.com/w/Install_NX_Se ... spberry_Pi. However, when trying to establish the connection, the following error message is displayed:

/ usr / NX / bin / nxserver: line 941: sessreg: command not found

Does anyone know where to find the package to install the program sessreg? I'm using the Raspbian "wheezy" distro.

Regards
