apt-get update problem

Thu Jul 19, 2012 11:02 pm

With the new release 2012-07-15 apt-get is working and have had no problems installing some packages. However apt-get update fails every time :-

Just running "sudo apt-get update". This usually runs cleanly.

After messing everything up trying to fix this problem, I copied the Raspbian image to the SD card again, and now it all works just fine.

Hi

I have a similar problem apt-get update and apt-get upgrade do nothing and uname -a returns 168 yet other people have mentioned version 202.

In addition vcgencmd doesn't do anything.

Any idea what I have done to my image?

Cheers

I had the same problem. Restoring the image didn't work, however.

I did fix it, though, by deleting /var/lock/dpkg/status and then touching a new one (sudo touch /var/lock/dpkg/status).

After that apt-get update ran fine.

I want to buy you a cold refreshing pint (or a cola if you don't drink) thank you SO much! I've been dealing with this for a week with no luck, and you have just solved all my problems, I cannot thank you enough.

I thought I had same/similar problem. Tried the touch status thing, no go. Then I realized I never plugged in the ethernet cable... DOH  !! Plugged it in and it works fine.

I experience the same problem with a fresh installed Raspbian “wheezy”. When I boot up the first time and log in with ssh and then do a "sudo apt-get update" I get the following error:

Reinstall does not help as I get this error also on a fresh installed raspi. Internet connection works. I also tried the dpkg status thing but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Just a FYI. The dpkg status thing worked for me.. except instead of /var/lock/dpkg/status it was /var/lib/dpkg/status like it says in the error.

Thanks!

Code: Select all

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/status
sudo touch /var/lib/dpkg/status
worked for me. After that I was able to update with "sudo apt-get update" without problem.

I tried everything others suggested. If I ran apt-get update, it freezes after a few seconds. Then I have to unplug it to reboot. I do not have a monitor, just ssh. I am getting HIGHLY disappointed with this device.

are you using a wifi dongle pluged into the raspberry directly?

Yes, it has a Wifi dongle, but I did not get to connect wireless. It just sits there.

After removing the WiFi dongle, I was able to run the update clean, but then, whatever I try to install,
it hits the libgcc1 dependency:

sudo apt-get install libgcc1
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libgcc1
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
2 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0 B/54.4 kB of archives.
After this operation, 203 kB of additional disk space will be used.

After two days of fiddling with this device, I am ready to send it back. Seems to be good only for selected few super-smart users. Maybe somebody can enlighten me at the last hour, but I am so far from mysql, tomcat, apache and wifi...

start afresh
reflash
expand rootfs
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
see that it is stable
then start adding the things you want

Thank you for the quick reply, but what do you mean by
start afresh
reflash?

Burn another flash? I can try to do that, but I am assuming it will take one day.
I bought the pi with a $10 flash card which started it up. Once I ran apt-get update, I assumed it installed the latest and greatest.

I really do not know where to go to "start afresh". Seems to be more info than functionality out there.

/var/lib/dpkg/status , it's the main list of all packages that are installed on your system. Removing it and replacing it with an empty file will mean that the package manager doesn't know any packages are installed which is almost certainly NOT what you want.

There have also been a couple of recent posts in this thread which look unrelated to the issues discussed here (which seem to be problems with corrupt package lists. I've split them off into their own threads.

Return to “Raspbian”
