You should be running apt-get update && apt-get upgrade at least once a week. Even that won't protect you from zero-day exploits.

how can i make it run and execute by itself?

will it update/upgrade everything and there is no need to do anything? i mean will it do it all in the background?

sudo apt-get install unattended-upgrades
sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades

But that can be a poisoned chalice, if a bad fix comes down the wire you could crash your system. So the way I used to run that on my (now decommissioned) Ubuntu system was to simply get the fixes down the wire but not install them until I was ready.

I've got seven Raspberry Pis that don't run my public webserver and one that does. Therefore I've got plenty of scope to test things, to take backups and be sure I've not got a bad fix before I deploy stuff to my B+ that's running the web services.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade will get all available packages.

do you mean making an updage/upgrade right?

my question is not that. my question is how to make sure that even after making automatic updates that it's really got done?

i want some way to be sure that i've the latest updates but just to get perhaps a msg saying "your system is up to date"

If it fails you'll get error messages. If it it works you get nothing.

the point is that... i'm not around the pi when the updates take place...

perhaps you are saying the easy way to check if my software up to date is to see what the command for updating gives? if it gives error then there was some problem?

i'm still a bit confused... :)

things work differently on a pc...

You really do NOT want to do unattended updates. It may seem like a good idea until something breaks your system.
