raspbian: kernel update

Mon Jun 08, 2015 1:40 pm

Hi All,
According to my knowledge the only way to update the firmware & the kernel is to execute "rpi-update" from the CLI.
Am i right or is there other cases where the kernel can be updated 'automatically' i mean without user intervention.

Nope, the kernel should come from the raspberrypi-bootloader package, managed by apt. rpi-update is used for testing bleeding edge firmware.

That is incorrect.
When a new firmware/kernel is released you will receive it through an update of the 'raspberrypi-bootloader' package.

With 'rpi-update' you receive the latest development version of the firmware/kernel which is usually not (thoroughly) tested and you should only use it when explicitly instructed to do so or when you want to help in the development of the firmware/kernel.
You should be prepared and capable to figure out what to do if your system won't boot then.

Would it be possible to publish the source package files for the raspberrypi-firmware package so I can do an apt-get source raspberrypi-firmware?

The package is built from already compiled binaries, so you won't get much out of the .dsc.

Of course I can push the source package as well next time, but what for?

For what it's worth, this is how it's built: https://github.com/RPi-Distro/firmware

Awesome, thanks, that's all I need. I should have been more clear with my question. I just wanted to know how these packages were built as I am tinkering with building these kind of packages myself.
