You have only 64 MB of RAM for the GPU. You have to set at least 128 MB, 160 MB for FullHD/High bitrate videos. 256 MB is the recommended for RPi 2/3.

Sorry for the late response, the version is kodi 16 and you guys were spot on as the problem was related to the stream being mpeg2. After purchasing the license, everything is running great. Turns out I could have just changed the encoding in my tuner to h264 but oh well the license is a cheap purchase. Big thanks to you guys for the great build and info.

I don't think you can change the encode type of your TV provider streams, unles you do some sort of real-time reencode.

How are you running Kodi, from the desktop, terminal or auto-start at boot ? Are you running Raspbian Jessie ? You can turn the debug on in kodi and check the log file.
I got distracted a bit :) The problem is still present on my kodi and I am surprised it is not fixed in the latest builds...
The problem is: whenever Kodi shows a virtual keyboard (search addon dialog, etc), it does not accept keyboard input and treats it as player shortcuts, for example - space is always a pause and it never enters a space character. I doublechecked permissions:

aik@aikrpi ~ $ grep aik /etc/group
tty:x:5:aik,kodi
dialout:x:20:pi,aik,kodi
audio:x:29:pi,aik,kodi
video:x:44:pi,aik,kodi
plugdev:x:46:pi,aik,kodi
input:x:999:pi,aik
lpadmin:x:108:root,aik
aik:x:1002:

I checked all the steps from setup guide, all is there, tried without addons, no difference.

Answering your last questions:
1. I run kodi via a shortcut in XFCE, the process is "/usr/lib/kodi/kodi.bin --lircdev /var/run/lirc/lircd"
2. yes it is jessie debian (PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie)")
3. I turned debug on, tried typing "space" in a search window and got this:

20:53:54 72609.132812 T:1944420352 DEBUG: Keyboard: scancode: 0x39, sym: 0x0020, unicode: 0x0000, modifier: 0x0
20:53:54 72609.132812 T:1944420352 DEBUG: OnKey: space (0xf020) pressed, trying keyboard action f020
20:53:54 72609.132812 T:1944420352 DEBUG: OnKey: space (0xf020) pressed, action is Pause

And "Pause" is what really happened.

Kodi version is:
aik@aikrpi ~ $ apt show kodi
Package: kodi
Priority: optional
Section: video
Installed-Size: 28.2 MB
Maintainer: wsnipex <wsnipex@xbmc.org>
Version: 2:16.1-3~jessie

Any way to fix the problem or it is just by design? Thanks.

Try
sudo chmod 0777 /dev/tty0
before starting kodi.
If that works, add
chmod 0777 /dev/tty0
to
/etc/rc.local
(above "exit 0")

Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications

I still think that is a permissions problem. Try running Kodi as root, just to test it, if it works, that's permissions problem.

Then you can add to rc.local
chmod 0777 /dev/tty0

and it will always work.

Hi,

does anybody know if there is Kodi 16 available in official sources?
The archive.raspberrypi.org repository only has 2:15.2-2~jessie 0.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ apt-cache policy kodi

kodi:
2:15.2-2~jessie 0
500 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/ jessie/main armhf Packages

Hello,

I have installed raspbian on my new raspberry pi 3 and I have kodi v16 on top of it. I have followed a tutorial to set the system in read only mode.

Once, it is is read only mode, if i try to launch kodi. It tells me gives me the following error message
"""
Could not init logging classes. Permission errors on ~/.kodi (/home/pi/.kodi/temp/)
Error: Unable to create application. Exiting
Could't get a file descriptor referring to the console
"""
It looks like kodi needs to write some logs to launch. Is there any way I can make it write those logs to a different location (RAM)? or disable writing logs altogether so that it works when the SD card is in read only mode?

Thank you so much.

I don't know, but I think not. Better check the Kodi Wiki and/or ask the same question in Kodi official forum.

Hi Rascas,
I'm using your version of Kodi 17. Unfortunately it is now crashing if I try to play a h265 file, I'm assuming other Pi updates since March have broken it, any chance you will be updating it?
Many thanks. Kevin.

That is strange. Earlier this week I was showcasing a RPi 3, recently updated with that Kodi 17 version and it played some h265 test files just fine. I will try again on monday, i am out this weekend.
I was expecting to compile a new Kodi 17 version when the first beta comes out.

Ok thanks, don't worry for the moment then. I am using the very latest kernel 4.4.14 I think. I'll look forward to the beta.
Thanks Kevin.

Hi Rascus,
For your information, I have now reverted to kernel 4.4.11-v7+ #888 and your build of Kodi 17 is again working fine when displaying h265 video files. :-)

Please post your Kodi log. Get it here after reproducing the problem:

Or follow this instructions:

Hi I'm a total noob to pi & Linux.
I have bought a pi2 and have managed to install raspbian Jessie and got kodi 15.2, I have been reading many post regarding adding deb http://pipplware.... but from start to finish how exactly do you do this ?
