cannot install Xorg / xinit via cmd line on Pi4

Wed Jun 16, 2021 1:26 pm

Hi all,

I am trying to install xorg & xinit on my Raspberry Pi 4 via the command line, with Xorg it installs about 97% then fails (see screenshot below) and with xinit it fails straight away.

The update script seems to to be pointing at an outdated URL (http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/), when i browse this site via a web browser the missing files are not listed.

However if i browse the latest site a similar file is available: http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/po ... _armhf.deb

Is there a way of installing Xorg / xinit via the command line that does not point to the old repository ? thanks

Your network's down - it can't resolve the repo's address.

My network is not down, it is able to install other packages (just did not include in screenshot).

As i said, the item it is looking for (xterm_344-1+deb10u1_armhf.deb) is not on http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbia ... n/x/xterm/ which the install script is looking for, but it is listed on https://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/p ... n/x/xterm/.

Therefore, is there a way of installing https://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/p ... _armhf.deb from the command line directly, instead of relying on an outdated install script for Xorg ?

You could just download the file & use dpkg to install it.

xterm (344-1+deb10u1 Raspbian:stable [armhf]) is readily available with no special actions (simulation follows - remove '-s' for actual install):

Code: Select all

thank you for all your help, much appreciated ! It actually fixed on its own in a weird way ...

I thought SSH might be interfering so went to check it was off via Raspi-Config, when i clicked that menu option the below happened automatically:

Image

I was then able to install Xorg no problem via cmd line.

Oh, all you needed was "sudo apt update" good to know for next time. :)
