Looking for Firefox 68 on Raspberry Pi

Tue May 04, 2021 10:00 pm

In short, I am looking for the Firefox 68 armhf deb? package installation file for Raspberry Pi OS (Raspbian) 10.

---

I use Raspbian 10 (Raspberry Pi OS).
I used to keep a Firefox ESR 68 on hold (apt-mark hold) on 1 of my 2 Raspberry Pi machines.
I offered this machine to a friend.

Now on my only left Raspberry Pi, Firefox ESR 68 is no longer provided by apt.

But I still need Firefox 68 on it, in order to remotely debug my userscripts on Firefox for Android 68.11.0 (latest version to support add-ons like Violentmonkey, thus userscripts) through adb.

Anyone knows how to install it back?
I think I need an armhf.deb file, right?

I found:
http://legacy.raspbian.org/raspbian/poo ... refox-esr/
http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/po ... refox-esr/
https://github.com/jdonald/firefox-armhf/releases

But no trace of a version 68 deb file.

I then found some firefox-68.11.0esr.tar.bz2 in https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox ... ux-x86_64/
Is x86_64 same as armhf?
How do we install .tar.bz2 files in Linux?

I also see a firefox-68.11.0esr.snap in https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox ... 0esr/snap/
I would like to avoid installing snap but maybe I should try this instead, does it include armhf?

I tried OK so I tried to run the firefox binary inside https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox ... _64/en-US/ firefox-68.11.0esr.tar.bz2

Error, so x86_64 is not same as armhf.

I then tried https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox ... 0esr/snap/ firefox-68.11.0esr.snap

Code: Select all

sudo apt install snapd
snap install --dangerous firefox-68.11.0esr.snap
But it said:

Code: Select all

error: cannot install snap file: snap "firefox" supported architectures (amd64)
are incompatible with this system (armhf)
I then tried https://github.com/jdonald/firefox-armhf/releases / firefox_65.0+build2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1-stretch-rpi3bplus_armhf.deb
Wow I could install and run.
But I was not sure if v65 could remotely debug v68.
I pressed Shift+F8 to launch v65 Web IDE (there was no v68 remote debug around).
It wants to install ADB Extension (or ADB Helper) but it fails.
I wonder if that developer is still around and could build an armhf 68 deb package.

It was explained in the first post: More recent versions don't have a violent monkey that supports the Android debug bridge.

No one should be running an old browser on any hardware.
Do yourself a favor and upgrade.
Create an account on the Firefox add-on site, create a list. Then you can install all the add-ons on your list.

Firefox on my Pi:
firefox:
Installed: 88.0.1-1
Candidate: 88.0.1-1

Firefox on my Android phone and Kindle Fire are the latest Betas.
Raspberry PI 400 Raspberry Pi OS (Unstable) Kernel: 5.10.17-v8+ aarch64 DE: MATE Ram 4GB
Debian - "If you can't apt install something, it isn't useful or doesn't exist"

Return to “Raspberry Pi OS”
