SMTP - not exim4

Sun May 09, 2021 4:31 pm

Trying to setup mail (outgoing, SMTP only) on PI4 64bit, and trying to avoid exim4 as an overkill. I have used exim on other pis, but wanted something simpler. I understand ssmtp has fallen out of favour, so I have installed, but not yet configured msmtp.

However pretty much everything I try to install adds various exim packages as dependencies - for example mailutils. I did manage to get mutt, but no mail!

Any idea why? - or how I prevent it?

Also the mail command only part of mailutils?

TIA

If you can program/build then I use this https://github.com/muquit/mailsend/ with some hacky shellscript in front of it to make it seem vaguely like sendmail. It suffices (for instance) to get headless rpi to email their ip addresses to an ISP mailbox and for my various boxen to send email reports to my internal mail server. I can post the hacky shellscript but only if you get the above working because I'll have to redact the script carefully.

Said you probly want a qmail-toaster

Yeah or a qmail and it requires extortion redhat patches so to compile you placed errno and redid a couple lines to make it work. I dont know. It just looks up the mx and then forwards based on the smtp settings and your reverse dns for your mx thats typically staticly bound.

Are you sure?

mailutils will work with MSMTP but you have to configure MSMTP with your account details before you can send mail.
mpack and mutt will also work with MSMTP once its configurd

have a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=28&t=244147

Thanks - that saved me a few minutes looking up the config!

Interestingly, when msmtp was configured apt doesn't insist on adding exim4, so I managed to install mailutils - normal service resumed. Still interested on that dependency though - seems bonkers
