Suggestions for upstream/downsteam firmware and pi images

Sun May 09, 2021 4:26 pm

I have a suggestion to the raspberry pi os software writers and how their different firmware should be handled.

I would hard set divisions on pi image versions:
Device tree version - device tree flash with fan ctrl, ntsc extended options removed (current)
non-device tree version without fan control and ntsc extended options (old)

On units that don't have the correct firmware, make it flash itself and reboot.

Disable all automatic firmware updates. This should have never been implemented. Firmware should always be a manual update.

This will solve a lot of issues mitigating new firmware. As for existing installations, a apt script should be able to patch for upstream/downstream firmware version handling.

I would suggest making both the "device tree" image and "classic NTSC" image available to download.

I'm looking at it as R&D product development engineer. Which was one of my previous jobs a couple of decades ago was for a company that made all the motherboards, raid controllers and other logic boards for Dell, Digital, SGI, Hewlett Packard, GE medical, and Compaq.
