YouTube videos in Chromium sound like a cracked speaker

Fri Apr 16, 2021 10:52 am

Playing YouTube videos in Chromium sound like a cracked speaker, but sound good in Vivaldi browser on exactly the same system. I use the most full-upgraded Raspberry Pi OS Buster on Raspberry Pi 4 B 8GB and AV Jack and 256 MB GPU Memory. This cracked sound becomes less if I lower the video quality, but then it gets blurry. I didn't have this problem before. It started a few weeks ago after a big update. I have of course rebooted the machine before tests and do not have libwidevinecdm0 installed. I had libwidevinecdm0 installed before, but that didn't help with the cracked speaker sound in Chromium. I don't have the sound issue in VLC.

Example video, but this cracked speaker sound in Chromium applies to almost all videos, but never in Vivaldi:

Do you get same behaviour with hdmi output?
Can you try with audio_pwm_mode=1 in config.txt?

I don't have a female HDMI sound input - my screens are DVI-D with HDMI to DVI-D adapters. (I have two screens.) I have an HDMI to VGA adapter with 3.5 mm stereo out, but I can't use that since it has male HDMI and I have no male microHDMI to female HDMI adapter. I could of course go out and buy an adapter, but they cost 160 SEK = 13 £(GBP) at my most local store.

audio_pwm_mode=1
made the cracking noise less, but introduced more background noise and noise in pauses on YouTube.

Some other settings I have in config.txt:
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
gpu_mem=256

arm_64bit=1
start_x=0
enable_uart=1
gpu_freq=250

pulse related ?

i would make/use my backup sd card and purge pulse, reboot and then test sound quality with alsa, then reinstall pulse.

This has been happening ever since the update to Chromium v88/v89, the old v86 worked fine.

Thanks for the confirmation that I'm not the only one with this problem. Do you get sound via AV Jack or HDMI?

The AV Jack, I've seen a few people report this sporadically since the update but I can only presume the majority of people don't have the same problem?

Switching off hardware acceleration in Chromium helps a little bit but perhaps that is because it ends up slower and drops a resolution. Even at 480p you can hear the clicking/clipping occasionally if you listen carefully for it.

I completely removed Chromium and all its settings and re-installed but that didn't help.

I keep on meaning to install the RPiOS from scratch but there are so many bits and pieces I added to this one, its my main desktop which interfaces to everything else and has all my music and programming stuff on it.
