recent vlc updates

Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:02 pm

I note on the forum that several people have referred to updates to vlc that have occured in the last few days. I just updated my system each of the last few days and updates to vlc have not shown up. I suspect that is because I had added raspian untested to my source repositories earlier back in December as per the following posts:

VLC testing at:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... t=libdav1d

and Chromium 78 available for testing at:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... g#p1578129

As noted in the latter post this change to the untested repositories downloaded to my system testing updates to vlc, chromium 78, changes to ffmpeg ,and the av1 decoder libdav1d3. The changes brought welcome performace enhancements including the proper decoding by vlc and mpv of vp9 codec video which before the update were rendered with artifacts by these two media players. I noticed no problems from leaving the untested repository in my sources. However since then I have not noticed any updates to these programs. Today I just reverted back to the standard raspbian repository and did an update. Still no updates have shown up for any of the aforementioned programs. I presume this is because any updates to these programs had already occured to my system while I was in the untested repository. Pro and cons of staying in the untested repo.?

Checking the raspbian buster repository I see the vlc updates to version 3.08 occured on January 8, 2020. Would they be exactly the same 3.08 updates I received while in the testing repository? I ask because my vlc 3.08 updates that came through while in the testing repository did have a few minor flaws. For example I had to do an rpi-update( I know not recommended!!) before I could play vp8 videos in vlc. For a while this firmware update caused vlc to suddendly crash as I noted in my post:

vlc testing at:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... g#p1584042

I resolved this vlc crashing problem by changing to the december 5th 2019 version of the firmware.

I note one minor but annoying probem that still persists that I encounter with some (very few) youtube videos played through vlc that load with audio but static video and which require vlc to be killed in task manager to close ie. :

In other words and perhaps I am flogging a dead horse but to be more explicit would the updates to vlc, ffmpeg, and chromium have been finalized in testing before they were uploaded to the stable repository ie did I get the very same updates while I was in testing

Why don't you check which versions of the packages you have installed? The following output shows the latest versions of these packages are installed (***) on one of my Pi4Bs. Do you have the same versions installed?

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ apt policy vlc
vlc:
  Installed: 3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7
  Candidate: 3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7
  Version table:
 *** 3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7 500
        500 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian buster/main armhf Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     3.0.8-0+deb10u1 500
        500 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Packages

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ apt policy chromium-browser
chromium-browser:
  Installed: 78.0.3904.108-rpt1
  Candidate: 78.0.3904.108-rpt1
  Version table:
 *** 78.0.3904.108-rpt1 500
        500 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian buster/main armhf Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ apt policy ffmpeg
ffmpeg:
  Installed: 7:4.1.4-1+rpt6~deb10u1
  Candidate: 7:4.1.4-1+rpt6~deb10u1
  Version table:
 *** 7:4.1.4-1+rpt6~deb10u1 500
        500 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian buster/main armhf Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     7:4.1.4-1~deb10u1 500
        500 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Packages

You can see here in the main repository that there have been three versions of 3.0.8 officially released -- http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/pool/main/v/vlc/

libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb9u1+rpt1_armhf.deb 2019-08-27 18:19 120K
libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt1_armhf.deb 2020-01-08 14:28 120K
libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7_armhf.deb 2020-01-08 15:26 120K <--- MOST RECENT

You can see here in the untested repository that there were some more versions -- http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/p ... ted/v/vlc/

libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt2_armhf.deb 2019-11-05 19:55 120K
libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt3_armhf.deb 2019-11-19 17:15 120K
libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt4_armhf.deb 2019-11-20 19:20 120K
libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt5_armhf.deb 2019-11-27 20:10 120K
libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7_armhf.deb 2019-11-29 16:57 120K <--- MOST RECENT

You can count on libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7_armhf.deb from the main repository being the same as libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7_armhf.deb from the untested repository (libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7_armhf.deb is libvlc-bin_3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt7_armhf.deb regardless of which repository it comes from.)

You can check on chromium-browser and ffmpeg the same way if you like.

Thanks very much- very useful information. The versions of these three programs that I acquired while in the untested repository were indeed exactly the same as the versions uploaded to the stable repository on January 8th.

I’ll throw out this little tidbit of info ( perhaps self evident ) that some users of vlc who aren’t aware may find helpful:

vlcs’s functionality can be enhanced by various add-ons. Three that I find particularly useful are:

youtube.lua at
https://github.com/videolan/vlc/blob/ma ... outube.lua

Youtube playlist addon at:
https://addons.videolan.org/p/1344170/

and TuneIn Radio addon at:

https://addons.videolan.org/p/1153982/

The files are downloaded and placed in the appropriate folder
within the /home/pi/.local/share/vlc/lua directory as per the add-on site’s instructions.
