Can I drive a LCD touch screen monitor via USB?

Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:42 pm

I am about to buy a Raspberry Pi and a 7" monitor model ELO 0700L from ELO Touch Solutions:
http://www.elotouch.com/Products/LCDs/0700L/default.asp

This unit has a single USB cable for power, resistive touch screen signals and video. Does this mean that in order to get it working with the R Pi I would have to break out the video cable from the composite USB cable and connect it to the R Pi's video output, or is this 'video' signal actually a digital signal? The supplier assures me that there are drivers available for most operating systems, including Linux, which tells me that this line cannot simply be connected to the R Pi's RCA video output connector.

So, the big question is: would I be able to get this monitor to work with the R Pi, even with some hacking?

Some advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The minimum specs seem quite high:

2.0GHz Dual Core CPU
512MB of RAM. More if other applications are to run at the same time.

It is supplied with a USB Y Cable so would need an external Power Supply

Yes states Linux, but x86 not ARMHF architecture

This thread has some info about Drivers http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 1&p=135285
I will always assume you are running Raspbian for desktop and Raspbmc for XMBC !

I have now discovered that the DisplayLink driver is necessary, and that other members on this forum seem to be having problems finding such a driver. I wonder whether any progress has been made...

I'm beginning to think that I had better not open that can of worms.

The Lilliput monitor from Carcomputer seems like a good alternative:

Does anyone have experience with this monitor?

Best not to look at what is advertised, no way can I find in links that Touch is enabled when connected to the Pi ! caveat emptor !

I have undertaken some research and found that there is an ELO Driver for Raspbian "wheezy" ARMHF

This package provides the driver for ELO Graphics touchscreens http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/xserv ... lographics

Also it is the Arch Linux Arm aka alrmpi repository ' armv6 extra xf86-input-elographics 1.4.1-2 X.org Elographics TouchScreen input driver''

Yes, I've been looking around in the meantime and it seems that no-one has actually managed to get a touch screen LCD monitor working on R Pi without problems. So maybe R Pi is not the way to go after all. Maybe another small form-factor PC. Problem is, they mostly run on Windows, which is what I'm trying to avoid...

Sorry, Spid, I didn't see your other comments in time. I'll check out the ELO driver links. Thanks

Great Spid the Debian "wheezy" Basic Blog Updated: http://debianarmpi.blogspot.co.uk

Would seem that USB Monitors cause issues, the solution Spid found is more elegant and does not impact on the Pi's USB BUS I/O :D
