Raspberry Pi 2 MPEG keys ?

Mon Feb 02, 2015 11:44 pm

Does the Raspberry Pi 2 also needs MPEG keys for decoding or they are "built-in" with the new CPU ?

Thanks.

The new CPU offers a NEON instruction set extension, with which alone it can be 20 times faster to decode MPEG using the CPU, aded to that are massive speed increases due to the much larger, main- I- and D-caches, and the higher clock speed. So it may well be that something like VLC now runs sufficiently fast on the CPU for many codices.
Note that VLC "bypasses" the licenses costs needed for many codices, by being written in countries where such license costs do not apply.
