working USB 3G/GPRS/EDGE modem

Hello there,
My Raspberry PI just arrived, and for now I just generally play around with it.
However my project which shall utilize Raspberry, will require a 3G/GPRS or EDGE modem (I don't really care for speed as it is just a couple of MB daily). I've seen a lot of talk about these, however I haven't seen a single confirmation for one to be actually working(or not). So - Has anyone got a USB cellular modem up and running on their Raspberry Pi?

it says Huawei E220 and Franklin U600 from Sprint / VirginMobile
but i guess any 3g modem will work that has linux drivers available

Thanks for your kind words. As far as I know, most USB dongles won't carry voice. Sorry.

Hello, I am attempting something similar in that I am trying to get a Virgin Mobile Franklin U600 (not to be confused with the U727 or U767 models) working with the Raspberry Pi. I don't care if its on the Arch Linux or Debian. I have tried using the Sakis3g software http://shkspr.mobi/blog/2012/07/3g-inte ... i-success/ only to no success with the U600. The U600 comes up in /dev/ as cdrom and has been fully activated in windows. I have gotten this to work in Debian on x86 by installing network-manager-gnome, and vmdialer. I then changed usb-modeswitch.conf file to be:

DefaultVendor=0x1fac
DefaultProduct=0x0150

TargetVendor=0x1fac
TargetProduct=0x0150
CheckSuccess=20

MessgeContent="5553424312345567824000000800108df200000000000000000000000000000"

I then shutdown the computer, plugged in the U600 device, start it up again, then go to the root terminal and type in 'modprobe -r usbserial' then hit enter and type in 'modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1fac product=0x0150' then hit enter and then type in 'dmesg|grep -i ttyUSB' then hit enter, type in 'vmdialer' click 'switch modem', the program fails at this point and I close out but as soon as I do this, network manager automatically detects the U600 device and connects to it and it works great! The device also is now listed in the /dev/ folder as 'serial'.
However this process doesn't seem to work on the Debian ARM Raspberry Pi version as the network manager doesn't seem to work right and being new to Linux in general, I have no idea what I am doing and little understanding of how this process makes it work on the x86 Debian but not on the ARM Raspberry Pi Debian. I really don't want to get another different type of USB dongle because the U600 is on sale at Walmart for only $20 per month for 1GB of data. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The SAKIS3g website is down, in this Raspbian "wheezy" basic blog is a link and instructions (about two thirds way down page) http://debianarmpi.blogspot.co.uk

If you are using alarmpi then following link at bootom of page to the Arch Linux ARm Blog..
