B+ Refuses to work

Sun Dec 07, 2014 4:26 am

So I recently got a B+ starter kit and I started it up and loaded it with Rasbian. It work fine for a while, I had a keyboard and mouse plugged in along with a WiFi dongle. All was well. Then I tried to boot it into open box mode. I probably am wrong, but I thought that might bring it to Command Line mode. Well the Pi froze. I could not do anything. Then I unplugged the power as there is no button on the pi itself and no power button was visible. When I plugged the power back in, it no longer loaded anything to my Asus monitor. Maybe what happened before was a coincidence and I just need a new HDMI cable? Maybe I accidentally broke a component in the minuscule amount of time it took to plug in and unplug the power? If someone could please please help so I don't have to buy another one that would be great.

I think it is very unlikely that you have done anything fatal to the RPi board itself. And if the cables worked before they will probably still work now.

More likely you have made some configuration change to the Operating System that has disabled output to your monitor. Alternatively you might have been unlucky and corrupted the content on the microSD card.

I suggest you simply re-install Raspbian. (This will of course lose any work or configuration changes you have made since the system was first installed.) Once you have a working system again perhaps we could explore what you meant by "I tried to boot it into open box mode" so that you can avoid making the same error again.

If the NOOBS card isn't completely trashed then holding the [SHIFT] key while you boot should bring up the recovery system and allow you to re-install Raspbian.

That's your choice. The only reasons I can see for not re-installing on your existing card might be if there is material stored on it that you hope to be able to retrieve in the future, or if the card is permanently damaged (unlikely). As has already been stated, if you used NOOBS and it is still booting the Installer it might be possible to re-install using the facilities of the NOOBS Recovery Console which you get by using SHIFT when prompted at boot-time.

I tried to plug in a keyboard and hold shift when I plugged in the power. That did nothing. I tried swapping out the sd card. That did nothing. I'm going to go and buy a brand new microSD card because if that isn't the solution it's still a pretty universal device. I will reply again once I try that.

Try holding down the other shift key.

FYI - Openbox boots to a blank dark gray screen with only a mouse cursor showing. Then you do right mouse click to get a menu.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Update: I got a new microSD card and when I plugged it in the problem persists. If it helps, both lights are (and have been) on and solid. No blinking or flashing. When I boot it and hold shift on a keyboard nothing happens. The problem persists where nothing shows up on the screen. Should I just send it back and get is replaced?
