Please read my popst.

Book "Raspberry Pi Cookbook"
author: Simon Monk
" Making a Webcam Server", page 99

I just followed all the steps indicated in the book.
When I run "$ sudo service motion start" the
webcam turns ON, then I type my Raspberry Pi
IP address followed by the port 8081
(http://192.168.1.131:8081) on the URL (Browser, locally,
no internet) but I get an open file window instead of the
video.

Thanks in advance

Beny

What do you mean by "an open file window" ?

According to the book It should open the browser (http://192.168.1.131:8081 and shows the video from the webcam. But that does not happen, instead It asks me what to do with the file (from http://192.168.1.131:8081) open, save or cancel. I clicked on open but it takes too much time and does not open anything.

Thanks a lot

You're not following the instructions in the book! It tells you to open a web browser on another computer on the same network.

Bear in mind that none of us, except you, have a copy of Simon's book.

So lets start with the basics
netstat -tln
wget http://127.0.0.1:8081

The first command should tell us what ports are open on your Raspberry Pi. The second command attempt to open a http connection to port 8081 and fetch the contents it finds there.

Nothing works. I am taking a break. Something that perhaps
is so simple but for me it's difficult.
Thanks to anyone that helped me

I am not sure which file format is used for the URL, but maybe it's a simple video stream over the HTTP protocol?
Did you try to open the URL in VLC for example, instead of the browser? It might be that your browser is not able to handle a video stream.

I think you're right, it's a simple video stream.
I know nothing about VLC.
But the book states to see it in a web browser.

Thanks. I appreciate your help.

It does seem odd that your browser would open a file-save dialogue. It should work fine, say on Firefox or MS Explorer from another computer on the network.

Motion usually works well on the Pi. I have one set up as a simple webcam server at home, and I have written an article on how to do it, here:

http://unixetc.co.uk/2014/01/20/simple- ... pberry-pi/

It is not using the live stream but they are not very different.

Well it works now. Using mozilla to open http://192.168.1.131:8081 shows the video stream.
I do not know what to say. Thanks to everybody. I appreciate your support.

My respects

Cool. Just curious - roughly how many frames a second are you seeing ?
