You can check the MPEGLA site for costs of H264 encoding licence. Not too expensive IIRC, but at the moment there is no way of using it if it is enabled. Once the camera module is finished, then we will need to enable encoding for obvious reasons!

The foundation is looking into the possibility of selling additional encoder/decoder licenses. The problem is to prevent them from spreading for free.

And technically OGV and MKV are actually container formats, not video codecs.

WebM would be the way to go if the GPU can decode with hardware acceleration.

I know there was a push in early 2011 for hardware vendors to cater for WebM - and quite a few mobiles offer HA WebM playback (Samsung bada for one).

Its an open codec & container - and it would be cool to have a hardware accelerated encoder using the gpu to encode/decode on the Pi.

I think we do have an implementation of WmM (On7?) decode to run on the GPU, but it is different enough from H264 that much of the HW acceleration blocks cannot be used (chip was designed around H264), so it's solely done on the VPU's. This means its not got the FPS of H264, but it is faster than CPU alone. I'm really not sure of the encode performance.
