£5 16GB SD Card from Play.com

Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:18 pm

Bought one of these earlier:
http://www.play.com/promotion.html?sear ... 648294}%2b

I have no idea if it will work with my RPi (I haven't been keeping up to date with what does or does not work), but I figured for £5 it is worth a try :-)

Like you say for a fiver it's worth a go... :)
Edit: or maybe not "Read Speed: 4MB/s" is pretty awful!

I've been using Sandisk 8GB Class 4 and been more than happy with them. I've just ordered one of these as I just couldn't resist it at the price! As long as the card is cheap and reliable I will be happy. There still seems to be problems with faster cards and they work out quite expensive on a £ per GB basis. I've not been able to stuff my cheap, slow cards yet, and I have tried!

Kerplunk - added to my ever growing SD card collection. . .
Good enough to stick some media on and used in a USB card reader though

They get cheaper and cheaper, don't they? I was sorely tempted to buy but managed to resist. I reckon we'll be seeing 32gb cards at this price before long. But I would be interested to hear how you get on with this brand of card.

Thanks for fixing the link, unfortunately the edit time on the forum is preventing me from changing the OP.

The card is quite slow, but nonetheless quick enough to do fairly basic things. Its also nice to have a second card in case mine breaks :D

Shame they corrected the price - it's £14.99 not £4.99

It was a limited-time-only special offer, not a "mistake" ;) It's now back to the regular price.

Seems like they probably got a lot of demand for it before, and if they are getting a good markup then it makes sense to put it on offer again.

Class 10 card @ 20mb/s reduced to £8.99 doesn't seem bad also

No judgement to make on this particular card, but it's been mentioned elsewhere on these forums that Class10 cards are very good for contiguous "large block" transfers (such as a digital camera taking megapixel-images would do), but for random "small block" transfers (such as an OS like Linux would do), they can actually perform worse than a Class4 or Class6 card.
Of course, YMMV :)

Just to say that my £5 16GB SD card arrived yesterday.
I've installed Wheezy on it and it is working fine.
Does what it says on the tin really!

On the latest wheezy
pi@raspberrypi ~ $ sudo hdparm -t /dev/mmcblk0

/dev/mmcblk0:
Timing buffered disk reads: 56 MB in 3.07 seconds = 18.25 MB/sec

Great, so much better than the 4MB/s that the play.com page advertises then! For 6 squid maybe it is worth buying after all ;)

Interestingly, with a Sandisk 8GB Class 4 on the new pre alpha Puppy, I get:-

14MB in 3.30 seconds = 4.24MB/sec

...which probably indicates that the Puppy distro is still using the old firmware & kernel, which limited SD card read speeds to approximately 4MB/s....
