Ideas for class project?

Wed Sep 03, 2014 9:09 pm

Hi guys. In my Assembly Language and Operating Systems (a 300 level computer science class) class we have been divided into groups of 4 and we need to come up with a project to work on. I suggested to my group we use Raspberry Pi as I already have one and have access to another. We came across many cool projects online, but I fear that because they have already been done they will be too easy. I was wondering if any of you had an idea for a different project or how we might attempt one of the projects below from scratch.

Some ideas we liked were:
N64 emulator
LED array
RPi Supercomputer

Again, I am afraid that because these have already been done it will be as simple as: 1. download source code 2. compile on pi 3. ./start

Any ideas? Thanks!

The Raspberry Pi supercomputer would be a great idea and would have room for improvement and experimentation. Since you are in an assembly language class, I recommend trying to build a small, custom OS to your liking that will do a specific task.

Edit: check out the magpi for interesting ideas.

How about building a robot ? Take a look at this link the foundation put up recently regarding a competition they're running and the various categories it can be measured against. I know its UK based but the ideas are still valid, and you never know maybe you could get some sponsorship to attend the event yourselves :)

How about writing a compiler?

You could create your own computer language and then write the assembler to turn your text file into an elf binary.

You could split the project up into the following areas:
  • Write the code to follow the ELF format, for your new compiler output.
  • Write the generator to turn you new language instructions into raw hex instructions.
  • Write a simple program using your new language e.g. a calculator.

Thanks for the ideas I'll show them to my group-mates tomorrow!
