We grow Boysenberries and Raspberries on the property here in Northern California, and being someone that enjoys food. How about carrying a food theme.
  • Pi \'ala mode,
    tarts,
    muffins,
    scones {for you UK types}
    brownie with Raspberry sauce,
    Ice Cream with Raspberry swirls
OK it\'s 6:30AM, I\'ve gotten hungry listing foods. I better go eat breakfast.

When I was at NASA Ames in Mtn View California, supporting the DEC VAX cluster, the names of the planets; Earth, Mars, Venus, ..., were used initially for naming the machines under DECnet.

It would be great if the Pi did a \"Bingely Bingely Bip\" boot sound.

We like the idea of bingly bingly bip boot sounds. Perhaps a boot sound competition once the logo competition is done would be a nice idea - anyone remember the Brian Eno Windows noise?

Other Boot sounds that appeal would be the hum of a huge PA amp being switched on (A sort of FOOOOOmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm), or the high speed whine of a Deltic being brought up to full chat.... (Indescribable, got to be heard, or felt)

A contest, or at least a sharing sounds good!

Given how literally most people have taken the \"raspberry\" aspect in the logo competition, I have terrible visions of a hundred variations on this --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mHRGzerJuQ

It might be rude, how about the sound of someone giving a Rasberry cheer?
Or it could be the Shut-Down sound.

probably \"bite me\" In the rpi case it might actually apply (note: an apple has already been bitten).

I tend to work on \"shortened\" descriptions of what the box does and add a letter onto the end to indicate the number of servers in a cluster.

Why use a letter instead of a number? Because most software releases are done based upon number so if your server ends up with the same name as the software and you have two releases of the software and two servers, meetings between ops and dev get very confusing! :)

An example schema might be \"<location><role><letter>\" giving you the following names:

Server 1:
Location: London
Role: Database Server
Hostname: LDN_DB_A

Server 2:
Location: London
Role: Database Server
Hostname: LDN_DB_B

Server 3:
Location: London
Role: Web Server
Hostname: LDN_WS_A

Well, If you are adding bingly bingly bip boot sounds, then you need to retain the LED\'s on the board, because its important to have lots of bibbly bobbly lights. Preferably blue.

I\'m up for this. I\'ll fire up Sonar X1 Producer over the weekend and see what I come up with. What do you want? Retro Arcade? Natural? Synthetic? Square Wave? Sine?

Also: worth a separate thread for this?

maybe Dink1, Dink2 ... after the Jawa type guys from the movie.

\"I will name him George and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him ... and pat him and pat him ... and love him and caress him...\" you can\'t call it George - that\'s the 7th rock out. Herschel called it George, but they wouldn\'t allow it, so it\'s now called Uranus. But it\'s still really George

I normally use an adjective animal combo.

mad-moose | server
brash-bear | desktop
albino-mouse | white eeepc
ornery-owl | tablet laptop(screen rotates)
metal-midget | mini-itx system

As you can see not all follow that rule, but works fairly well.

Back in the heady days of the dot com boom, the office we worked in had machines named after the fruits of the dicotyledonous plants. Sadly, the raspberry is not one of those.(The guy who came up with that went on to work on controlling the brains of maggots with a Wiimote in Zurich for a living; it takes a special kind of imagination.)

I\'ve been naming my devices after Decepticons, so I\'m thinking my first Rasberry Pi will be named Overkill.

I\'ll name my RPi after characters from the Touhou series. (for those you don\'t know, Touhou is like asteroids only with Touhou characters and bullet hell).

In many languages repetition of (some syllables of) a name denotes love for its owner.
So I was thinking about lavatorially calling it pp.
