*Checks notes*

Next machine to be connected to my private LAN will be 192.168.1.14 - \'Silicon\'.

Oh, and blue LEDs will be removed, boot sounds will be dealt with. Harshly. :)

I name all the machines on my LAN after Greek Gods (for servers) and Titans for non-server PCs.

I might start naming the Raspberry Pis after Chthonic deities (such as Cerberus and Charon).

My computers have a very strict naming scheme.
All machines are named after sounds animals make.

Windows machines are named after carnivores.
Linux machines are named after omnivores.

Desktops and Laptops are named after pets.
Servers are named after livestock.
Mobile devices are named after birds, fish and insects.

in the past
X86 devices were named after mammals.
Other architectures were named after reptiles, amphibians, etc...

The smaller the device (both spec and physically) the smaller the animal.

As such my laptops are
\"Meow\" (cat) and \"Eeek\" (monkey) in windows
and \"Woof\" (dog) and \"Oook\" (ape) in linux.
My server are \"Baah\" (sheep), \"Moo\" (cow) and \"Oink\" (pig).
\"Woof\" is bigger than \"Meow\" and \"Oook\" is bigger than \"Eeek\".

My cellphone is \"Chirp\" (bird) and my N810 PDA is \"Blub\" (fish)

However since the r-pi will potentially add 2-5 new non x86 Linux server, i might have to relax these naming conventions a bit.
Anyone have some recommendations for omnivorous livestock that aren\'t mammals?
Otherwise i might go with \"neigh\" (horse), \"tut tut\" (cangaroo) and \"woooo\" (ostrich) but i will have to think about it a bit more, since the sizes don\'t fit.

That\'s a really interesting naming convention. XD

Perhaps a goat? Those are relatively small, but they make a similar/same sound as a sheep, so that may get confusing. A chicken, maybe? Iirc, they\'re omnivorous as they eat seeds/grain and worms. \"Cluck\" would be a fitting name imo. :D

As for my naming convention, I\'m still thinking about it. Maybe characters from classic nintendo games, such as (lake) Helia, Red, Yoshi, Goomba, etc. Or maybe different elements, but that\'s a bit bland.

I\'m not the most creative person. :P

edit: You know what, I think I\'m going to stick with the nintendo characters. Laptops will be named after enemies, desktops will be named after heros, and the servers/otherwise will be named after bosses. :P

I have a really weird naming thing going on with my PC\'s.
Basically it\'s a word that\'s put against an animal.
My Laptop is called \"ElectricDuck\".
My Desktop is called \"SparkFish\".
I\'m getting a 6 Pi\'s, which will be put into a cluster, which will be named \"FireCat\". The slaves will be called \"FCs1\", \"FCs2\" and so on...
God, I never knew I had imagination... :D

Of course! I forgot about poultry! There are so many options now: chicken, ducks, geese, turkey....
It makes perfect sense! Thank you!

I name all the machine\'s in my lan after their main productnumber or productname. If there are more systems with the same productnr/name then I add a numbered suffix.

Back in art school, all the SGI 3D machines would have European city names (Antwerp, etc). But they were old, and my own Amiga was so much faster I had to start using sci-fi city names to keep things in perspective :).

Currently, I have a Mos Eisley and a Bespin. Arrakeen is also taken. For the Pi, I need a smaller city. \"Luke\'s uncle\'s moisture farm in the middle of nowhere\" isn\'t really feasible, so I\'m open for suggestions.

P.S. I use vehicle names for portable storage. Currently, my Millennium Falcon is almost full.

I have a tendency to name devices after starships... My first tower was named after the ISD (Imperial Star Destroyer) Eviscerator, while my first laptop was Defiant. My latest Alienware M11x is named after the ISD Virulence.

As these will be performing more task oriented things, I\'ll probably just name them after smaller ships with a given task. Except the one I\'m likely to make into a carputer - that one will be named in line with my car, Voyager.

There is something quite satisfying about naming machines, and you get to feel a bit smug about a theme to explain to everybody else.

My production machines are \'Classic\' Race winners ( Derby etc.) ( The LNER used the theme for steam locomotives ...)
I have named lab machines after the Knights of the Round Table and character names out of Dr. Who ( starting with antodus )
I have seen herb names (after Parsley the Lion et. al. ) and I have heard of a scheme using single malt whisky names ( servers) and blends ( clients/desktops ).

If pressed, how about random \"alien names\" - ( http://www.quick-name-generator.com/ ) usually turns up some inspiration ! ( Other alien name generators are available )

My hardware is named after character from a movie called Rock & Rule, so my Wii name is Mok, my desktop is Omar, my router name is Angel, my laptop is Quadhole, the one I found in the trash is Baglady and when I get my Pi, I think I will name it Mylar. I have other computer stuff name after other character in the movie but I can\'t remember which is which right now.

I have been naming my computers after cars. So far I have

Veyron - Bugatti Veyron (my main PC really powerful)

Elise - Lotus Elise (small Suttle bare bones PC, now a file server)

Volvo - Boring box cars (bought this from PC World when Veyron broke down)

Atom - Ariel Atom (my little Netbook)

Following this basis I think the most suitable name would be Peel P50 or Trident

My computers are all named after places, objects, plot elements, and (*VERY* rarely) characters from Inti Creates' contributions to the Mega Man video game series. Inti Creates made the four Mega Man Zero titles, the two Mega Man ZX ones, as well as Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10.

Examples include Fortitude-Creed (ThinkPad, my ailing main box which my RPi will replace), Grand-Nuage (MacBook), Area-Zero (Wii), and Pandora (imaginatively, my Pandora).

My Raspberry Pi will be named "Model-W", after the Model W Biometal that's at the core of the ZX series' plots. I know that the Model A/Model B thing is a BBC Micro reference, but I just couldn't resist going with this name.

Back in the late 1980s when I was serving a second stretch at the University of Wisconsin — Madison, the Computer Science department paid homage to Wisconsin's dairy industry by naming almost all [1] their machines after kinds of cheese.  As anyone who's watched Monty Python's "Cheese Shop" sketch knows, there are very many kinds of cheese.  Charles de Gaulle is quoted as saying "How can anyone govern a country with 400 different kinds of cheese?"  So UW-Madison had machines named cheddar, swiss, brie, edam, …, and even the uniquely American cheese products velveeta and kraft-slices.

I was in ECE.  My computers were named after Galaxies: Andromeda, Leo 1, and Leo 2.

[1] All networks need a machine named "elvis".

Easy. My devices are all named from Discworld. E.g. my firewall is Detritus, mail server Moist, iPad Necrotelecomnicon and Kindle is L-space.

I could only call my Pi Dibbler.
