limited sd card storage ?

Mon Aug 11, 2014 11:42 am

Hello,
I recently bought a model B raspberry pi. As I had a 16 gb sd card lying around, I used it to for the OS .
Now I know that 16 gb is a bit overkill , so I got another 8 gb sd card that I want to use instead.
The problem is that I noticed my 16 gb sd card only has a capacity of around 50 mb. I tried formating it to erase everything, but that did not work.
Does anyone know how to make it go back to 16 gbs ? I first installed risc os on it before switching back to raspbian .
Thank you for any help.

Hi and welcome to the forum,
when you write the downloaded Pi image tot he SD, it creates a number of partitions. Only the boot partition is able to be seen usually by Windows, and that is the 50mb that you can see.
The pi makes use of the other partition, although not all of it be default. If you want to re use the SD card for the Pi just re-write the Pi image to the card again - it will take care of the partitions. If you want to use the SD card for 'normal' use, you will need to disk management tools to get full use of it again, eg fdisk, etc
Hope this helps,
Texy

If your in windows, use SD Formatter 4.0( google is your friend :D ). Makes it real easy to get your cards back to a windows format.
