How to label those tiny micro sd cards?

Tue Jul 15, 2014 12:34 pm

I label my SD cards with a blank adhesive label. Not much room, but enough for me.
But now we must use tiny micro SD cards. How could you label these pesky little monsters?
You could mark them with a color.

This is another clever idea, but not practical:

Any other ideas?

I just put a (very) small adhesive label on each of my SD & microSD cards containing just a single letter (A, B, C, etc.), and then have a separate paper-pad on which I note down what I've currently got stored on each of the lettered (micro)SD cards.

A one-time pad, like any good coder

LOL!
I change the contents of my SD cards so often that I actually use pen to write down the card letters and then use pencil to jot down the card's contents, so that it's easy to rub out and change later. Making it a many-time pad ;)

If you don't mind having the label dangle off of the card. You can scotch tape a paper label to the card. And double over the tape on the backside for a kind of laminate configuration. With scissors to trim any sticky overlap. With a printer and a little graphic design you can print the tag and have pretty labels. Although the UID method with an external table is a good idea. Assuming the table stays with the cards, gets updated, and there's no duplicate IDs.

Or just have one base system card that you use to chroot into installs that exist on a large usb storage device that holds all the other images. And I guess a 2nd copy of that base system for when the flash media fails.

I use a Brother P-touch. I use the smallest font and trim the label.

of course perhaps you are looking at the problem the wrong way and rather than having a single pi & multiple cards you should have multiple pi's as well and just stick the label on the pi

I've always got three or four packets of these little Midori stickers in the front of my notebook. (Largely because I often find myself hanging out with small kids, and there is *nothing* that gets you in tight with small kids better than teeny weeny stickers.) Most of them are just the right size for MicroSD cards, and most packs have duplicates so you can stick one on a card, and one in a notebook with a note about what the sticker represents next to it.

Yes, miniaturization can go too far. At least for my old eyes.
The micro sd card has a little border. You can tie things to it.

This is my solution. Just for a happy smile.

I do something similar. I have a table with letter and contents columns.
I use white correction fluid to write letters on the SD or uSD card as per picture.
I have done this for some time as I (mostly) use uSD cards and adapters in the A & B PIs

ooooo ooooo my turn my turn!
with a really small pen!

I use the silver stinky markers. I write just a few letters and I put the rest on a text file on the microsd itself.

I'm trying TIppex wiped flat and written on. Seems to survive insertion in to the micro SD socket OK.

oo! Oo! I know this

Print a QR code on a sticky label printer, scalpel the sticker and place on the micro sd-card, and then use the pi camera with zbar to identify the card.

or using easily available components to hand, <cough, cough>kids lego*</cough> have your pi control a robotic vault archive, similar to LTO3 tape loader https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yDUJ1XJZHY or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-eWDuEo-3Q because that is clearly what you need for your pi cluster.

mark
*kids lego obviously being the technics from your childadulthood

ps. youtube has failed me! I tried to find the duelling robot tape scene from 'hackers'

This is my first post and I know this is an old thread, so don't scold me for posting in it.. but I do something relatively simple I'd like to share.

Take a silver Sharpie and draw a square on the bottom of the SD card (so you don't mark over its front label), and then after it dries take another sharpie and label it however.. in the picture I attached, it says "bpi" in braille on both the microSD card and the adapter.

It sounds permanent.. but if you need to relabel it, just go over it with the silver sharpie again.

I have simply colored in the top of my cards with various colored permanent markers. Mine are all plain black cards with white markings, which you can still read just fine, they're just not white anymore. Then, on a sensibly sized piece of paper that I keep with the cards, I've made a key. The blue one is my full desktop, the red one is RetroPie, etc. You can write this on the adhesive-backed section of a trimmed down sticky note, and keep it in the recessed area on the back of a Micro-SD card holder like this one (https://www.amazon.com/Micro-SD-card-ho ... B006J73RAI).

A quick glance at the key, and I can then just grab the Orange one, for example. I can also re-write the sticky note any time I want to reassign my cards to different builds.

I generally put microSD cards in a full size adapter and label that with an adhesive label.

What the? This is still raging on?
I still use the silver sharpies to write very few letters on the card. When its over filled, I just silver up the card and use a black sharpie.
OR you could use white-out and then you could use a pencil or pen.

Old post, but I'll pile on.

Nail polish or model paint. I color the top and edge of the card. For cards that I have multiples of (primary, secondary, backup, etc.) I color dots on the edge with a sharpie to tell them apart, even when they're in a Pi at the time. Then, I have a 'key" as others have suggested, although they're not hard to remember.

Red = RPHS = My home server
Blue = Backups (Used to be CrashPlan RIP)
Pink = PluralSight = Whatever I'm in the middle of building for my course.
Green = Pihole... because pink was already used.
Orange = things in development, changes a lot
