Show and Tell App Store?

Mon Jun 11, 2012 9:57 pm

Browsing around these forums, you realise there's a lot of work going on with all storts of software being developed. Some of it available on personal websites, university websites or Sourceforge etc

Would anyone agree that it might be useful to have some portal/website listing available software? It could be categorised by say Programming, Biology, Mathematics. User would be able to leave comments, give it 5 stars or something. Call it Show and Tell or something?

I do realise that such a website would involve a lot of work. It's kind of like download.com but for RasPi.

It already exists for Debian as the Synaptic Package Manager. It is not specific for the Raspberry Pi.

To install it, use the command
sudo apt-get install synaptic

The same list of packages are also viewable / installable by using aptitude on the command line.

Also there is a shed-load of stuff which isn't in the Debian repository (even on x86 platforms) and that is without raspi specific stuff (which could even be examples).

Some of those could be added - especially if it didn't require any maintenance - to the contrib part of the apt repository.

Alternatively a raspi specific apt repository could be created.

But even if all the software existing in the repo then it doesn't do quite ALL the OP wants.

There are no comments or star ratings on packages for examples. Ubuntu's Software Center has stars. I've used the Android store too (which has comments and stars) and generally I have concerns about both comments and stars for a Linux software repository.

What would be useful is some kind of raspberry pi specific sourceforge that allows you to browse software created specifically for the pi: some things are currently quite hard to find.

Actually very little is created specifically for the pi at the moment. Most is general linux programs.

What kind of programs are you thinking of?

Perhaps things like the RPi.GPIO, and maybe even the operating systems. Everything feels a little scattered about at the minute, and sometimes it's really not obvious as to where you go or downloads/installation instructions. Maybe it's just me being to obtuse and/or lazy :P

Ooh, rpi-developers.com does look interesting :)
