Or should that be titled - Eben likes cola? lol

Several times he said that the software was shipped with the Pi.

Oh no it is not, the pi is supplied stand alone without SD card, OS, software, PSU etc.

These are not shipped with the Pi.

They may be available as additional extras to purchase or download but are not shpped withe the Pi.

That video was misleading IMO.
(Or do the Yanks get a special deal we in the UK do not?)

That's the FINAL version IMO (Educational version).
Current version is for developer that develop the software.

He's using "ship" idiomatically - and that's quite normal in the industry. I have a sense you're splitting hairs for the fun of it here (you posted the same nitpick on the blog comments, and we answered you there too).

When we publish software as part of the approved stack (the stuff on the Downloads page), it's considered shipped. That's a perfectly normal use of the word; it appears it's not one you've encountered before, but nobody's misleading you.

Liz, thats a load of tosh!

I am well versed with the term ship and its usage.
I am not splitting hairs here.
If you do not currently ship with everything then it IS misleading to say so.

If you do not ship with the OS - do not say you do.
Saying things like that is akin to salesmen, they will say anything to sell the product.

Your response on the blog page is also misleading, there is no other use of the term "ship with".
If it is software that can be downloaded then it should be said it can be downloaded, not repeatedly "shipped with".read your own blog comments - there is someone on there asking where they can get it also.

That is all I am getting at, you would not want disappointing customers thinking that they are going to get everything with the Pi for the cost of the Pi?

Thousands of customers have seen that video (and a large number of people watched the talk live).

Only one of them has complained.

No one has complained, its not a complaint Liz.
I am mentioning it so that you are not misleading your customers is all.

He's got you Liz, after all you're just an experienced lawyer whose spent countless hours involved this aspect of the industry whereas he's a random person on the forum with an opinion.

There are times when I really do have to pinch myself to see if I am dreaming...

Pedants are cynics without imagination.

Mattylad, get a life.

get one yourself, I have a life ta.

If you go and buy a TV and are told it comes with a remote, when you get it home and it does not have one you'd be a bit peed off. You'd complain at the store and likely get given a remote and the manager would say that the staff would be reminded not to say things that are not clearly true.

Call it pedantic if you wish, I call it being totally honest when advertising something.

Luckily for Eben, the ASA doesn't cover talks given at hacker conferences in America. ;)

(I'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked yet!)

Well I was unusually sarcastic in my response and wanted to give the OP a chance to respond... but he has so I will go ahead and close the thread ;-)
