The key element is protection from radiation, protection from very low temperatures, then communication with ground based stations, permissions etc. Students often get access to CubeSat program - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CubeSat - and if Raspberry Pi based satellite would be approved then it could fly.

Would it even need a pressure vessel? Would it work okay in a vacuum?

Because there are capacitors on the board and most capacitors will not function properly without a pressure vesicle. I know how to deal with maintaining pressure but what about electromagnetic interference from the sun and other sources ect.... It a vaccume heat would stay trapped on the raspberry pi board. In a vaccum could this cause the raspberry pi board to overheat?

Electronics that is space-compatible costs a lot, while it may be a Core 2 Duo board And in general electronics in space is heated to some temperature at which they work and don't fail.
