Home Automation System Manager

Sat Mar 29, 2014 12:11 am

Ok so we've all heard about home automation systems and there are loads of projects out there for the Pi however these are all entities within a home automation system, for example:

sprinkler; IP camera, temperature sensor etc...

Does anyone know of any projects which aim to combine all of these entities together under one management system where you can view and control entities from one place?

I've been reading lots lately about http://www.opensourceautomation.com/ and wondered if there was a similar system in existence/development for the Pi.

I looked at the source code for that product. Written in Visual Basic/Visual Studio?!

Look at what you want to do as data aggregation and reporting. All that is needed is to build each function and then tie them all together with a few web pages.

Yeah I thought that as an open source project the developers had made some strange choices which somewhat limit it as an open product - visual basic and windows based.

I was thinking about designing something myself. As my university dissertation project I made a door access control system for the Pi which uses RFID cards and an electromagnetic door lock controlled by a Pi-Face, I programmed it in java. The product itself is 'finished' and I'm just writing up my evaluation. I learnt a lot developing it and I'm sure I could have a bash at designing my own Automation System Manager, perhaps implementing an access control system into it as well...

I might write up a design doc and gather some opinion from the forum about the sort of direction I should take and see if anyone else would be interested in developing as well.
