Things I've Learned

Mon Mar 17, 2014 8:14 pm

Having been a regular customer of this forum for one year now, I thought I'd post a list of the Top 10 Things I've Learned on the Raspberry Pi Forum:

10. Virtually everything I know about the Raspberry Pi

9. Most of what I know about Linux operating systems

8. I = V/R (Actually, I learned that in school, but had completely forgotten it)

7. Minor skin grafts can be performed on pigs by covering any cuts and grazes with thin strips of bacon.

6. A single resistor, diode, or transistor can become a point of contention amongst EE-types, potentially leading to blows.

5. A topic titled 'Did I fry my Pi?' almost invariably can be answered 'Yes'.

4. The joy of lighting up your first LED is completely disproportionate with the response from family and friends.

3. Reading instructions is not innate, but is a skill that can be easily acquired with practice.

2. It takes a village to write a program.

1. A small group of people with a big vision can touch literally millions of lives.

Ha! I lit up my first LED in the early 1970's.

It's still a thing of beauty when your latest creation comes to life and lights up it's LED under program control for the first time!

It still gets blank stares from those around.

11. never connect 12v to your Pi GPIO it can kill it (as has happened to many times by forum members).
I = V/R is a piece of cake to remember but try Laplace transforms or Maclaurin series I hated the maths but not nearly as much as the evil Smith chart. :D

I taught a Unix Administration Class once. It was a once a week, 8 hour class that lasted 9 months. We covered almost everything Unix from C to file system design to device drivers. At the end, those that passed were given the title "Junior Unix Administrator". To attain the title "Unix Administrator" takes a few years in the battlefield. :o

12. Almost every problem is down to a crap power supply. But that won't stop people posting again, and again, and again and again.
13. All the other problems are finger trouble.

14. Nobody searches the forum before posting their never been seen before problem.
15. Everyone assumes their problem is mission critical and should have been solved yesterday.
16. The problem can't be in the code I wrote, as I always write perfect programs. That bug MUST be in the os/camera module/firmware driver - it IS NOT in MY code.

I lit my first LED in 1978.

17. [sarcastic] People from this forum can see a circuit on my desk. Therefore, when asking for a solution, I don't have to describe my setup nor post the schematics...

18. I no longer search the forum before I post. "Information: The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: xxx." Instead, I search on https://duckduckgo.com/ like this:
example: "gpio with python site:http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/"
and many relevant suggestions are returned.

Ok, I think we may be veering off slightly from the positive sentiments of the original post. I've personally seen every contributor to this thread go out of his way to help the newbie (often that was me), so let's admit it, you're all a bunch of softies.

21. They talk tough, but if you need help, this is the place to be.

22) The foundation should have put a multicore processor on the RPi and 1GB RAM. C´mon, that would be just, maybe, 35$ more??? (Trying to be sarcastic here in a language I learned at school)

One thing I have noticed since the release of the Pi is that the market for hobbyist friendly arm boards in general has got much more reasonablly priced. The cubie2 for example has a dual core processor and 1GB of ram for less than twice the price of the Pi.

I don't know how much of this is natural evoloution of the processors and how much of it is people realising that if they stick their neck out and price based on high volume there is a pretty decent arket out there.

24) I can ask for help without providing enough details, and once I am coerced enough to provide enough info, I won't bother to mention that the proposed solution by my torturer solved my issue ;)

Oh but they do, they search the forum, find a thread full of people all of which have problems that look vaugely similar on the surface but are actually totally different, then start randomly trying things from the thread, quite possiblly making the situation worse.

(43) the bug is often between the chair and the keyboard
(44) the biggest the bug is, the less you see it.

It would be great to gather all that :-)

I may have beaten you

1970 (I think). The big boss came into the workshop; "Can you put power on this?" No information, no data sheet, not even where he'd got it.
So I stuck it on the transistor curve-tracer, and it lit up!
