Camera cable lengh

Thu Feb 27, 2014 8:20 am

Hi all,

I'm working on a project which require a camera. This camera needs to move about 40cm from the rasberry.

All i know about this camera cable is : "15 Pin ribbon cable, to the dedicated 15-pin MIPI Camera Serial Interface (CSI-2)"

I'd like to know :
What is the cable which is bought with the camera lengh ?
Where can I buy long enough cable same as this one ?

Thank you :)

Flat ribbons seem to range from 5cm to 100cm.
You can go further using adaptors to standard IDC ribbon cable or twisted pair.

I remember one of the mods/devs saying they wouldn't go over 50cm and the standard length is short for a reason.
Sorry I can't remember the exact quote or who said it (I want to say Dom), but I remember it being mentioned when it was first released.

I got a 30cm cable from eBay, that works perfectly. 15cm was just way too short for where my RPi was sitting relative to the subject I was photographing.

Although I originally thought much more than 30 would be a problem, in practice, many people have got lots more than that. I still don't know how! I am guessing they will be seeing a lowering of quality as the lines get longer.

Really? Given it's digital, shouldn't they just see it get unreliable, or go to shash as they approach the cliff, and the eye closes?

I would imagine 1 meter should be possible after all HDMI is also digital and that seems to pretty resilient to the ill effects of lengthy cables. :)
The camera module from what I understand doesn't take kindly to lower than expected voltages so if anything longer cables would equate to power losses and brownouts.
Perhaps if the 3.3v and ground supply rails from the GPIO could be carried externally via thicker heavy duty cables to the camera board then maybe this could eliminate the power problem.
