Also, don't miss the upcoming Java 1.8 (road-map lists its release as mid of March 2014), which in several aspects is a nice improvement compared to Java 1.7, also speed-wise. Java 1.7 is pre-installed on our PIs with Raspbian. Java 1.8 is currently available
as Release-Candidate b129 for most platforms including our ARM based Pi.
For example this sounds well:
