Openelec XBMC Resolution Issue

Wed Feb 12, 2014 7:15 am

I've started up the OpenELEC option on a freshly installed NOOBS image, and while the interface is telling me it's running at 1920 x 1080p, it isn't. It's running considerably lower than that, and looks quite low quality and blurry. If I select 1280 x 720p it looks much crisper, but of course isn't actually using the full resolution of my display. 1080p works just fine in Raspbian, so I know the hardware is capable. If I go back and select 1920 x 1080p in the XBMC preferences, it goes back to being quite blurry again.

Any hints on where I can make an adjustment to a config file or something to force it to be nice?

Firstly what is the HDMI resolution? ssh in and run:

Code: Select all

tvservice -s
Make sure overscan is disabled on TV as that reduces quality.
Check the display menu options (it may be called "just scan", "screen fit", "HD size", "full pixel", "unscaled", "dot by dot", "native" or "1:1").

Did that, it is reporting that it's running at the right mode:

Code: Select all

OpenELEC:~ # tvservice -s
state 0x12001a [HDMI CEA (16) RGB lim 16:9], 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, progressive
Everything on the interface is quite fuzzy, and videos play fuzzy as well. I've checked the information on the monitor (it's a viewsonic monitor, not a TV set) it reports that it is in 1080p mode, no overscan.

When I switch down to 1280x720p it all looks much better. As previously mentioned, raspbian runs just fine in 1080p - very crisp looking text. So hardware-wise it should be working. But it looks terrible in OpenELEC.

Frodo openelec limits gui to 720p.
It doesn't limit video playback, so a 1080p video shoudl not appear fuzzy.

You can try a gotham openelec build which will default UI to 1080p.
I'd suggest the latest milhouse build from here:

But be aware gotham may not be compatiable with older plugins.
