We have a pretty wireless-opaque house, and use a Pringles can-tenna to surprisingly good effect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantenna
I wanted to pipe music wirelessly from my playroom into the garage. The garage has *loads* of iron in it and, as any Prattchet fan will know, "you can't magic iron".
The solution was a cantenna. In my case, it was made from a whiskey can. (I'm sure that I'd get a few dB over a *Pringle* can.) It works well but is *very* directional.
P.S. I have a use for the RasperryPi that will entail the need for long-range(ish) comms. Unfortunately, the 'Pi will need to be encased in 10mm steel plate and, thus, will be in a tiny Faraday cage. I'm hoping that a really *large* WiFi antenna on the back on my Defender will enable the range I need...
