Recommendation 300Mbps+ wifi dongle

Sat Feb 01, 2014 5:00 am

Is there any wifi dongle that woks with Pi model B which supports 300mbps or above?. I am planning to use mine mainly for streaming videos and so the higher transfer rate will be better.

WiFi 802.11n goes up to 600Mbits/s.

So find a good, supported USB 802.11n dongle with an external antenna and you'll have the hardware that can achieve your 300Mbits/s (and more). You'll want to use it in a powered hub as it's going to need the full USB spec 500mA.

You'll then find that the real networking bottleneck on the RPi is the USB interface, it's, simply, not fast enough and there's no way to improve it. Because the on-board eth0 is driven off the same USB interface chip it's never going to go very fast either.

This is the one that I am using, works well with my Raspberries. I have not tested them for range but that is coming soon.

I agree with Doug.

You can up the wifi speed all you want, but the usb interface is going to throttle you back.

Not much point in trying to go over the 150Mb standard.

For comparison I just transferred a 750MB file to and from my RPi NAS drive over a wired connection to Win8.1
(Speeds as reported by the Win8.1 file-manager pop up window)

From Win8.1 to RPi NAS = 8MB/s (64Mb/s)
From RPi NAS to Win8.1 = 5.5MB/s (44Mb/s)

I have not tried this over WIFI yet but WIFI will be slower.

Note NAS drive is 2T hard drive formatted ext3
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Just a little sidebar note: I was unaware of the 150mb limitation of the Pi however, what I have noted in my streaming video situation is: if I use another Pi and the GPU, the latency is very low but using mplayer on Linux with out a graphic accelerator, the latency is as high as three full seconds stream video at 720p.

There is no defined 150Mb limitation in the RPi. I was just saying there is no point is buying equipment that can go faster than many of the common adapters which max out at 150Mb/s. The RPi can't handle even that due to the USB bottleneck.

Are there any test results showing when the usb communications has maxed out? Just asking for edification.

Using a USB hub is something i am trying to avoid..How about this one http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F7D2102-Mi ... dongle+300. Will it work fine with Ras? I donno much code and other stuff, i would prefer to use a plug and play solution.
