Yes, it works very well to format and partition also SD cards used in the PI.
And instead of using a console tool like "dd" to copy a downloaded Raspberry OS raw image file to a SD card, I find a GUI tool much more handy, like for example Redhat's "palimpsest". It's included in typical Debian based Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Raspbian, etc in the package "gnome-disk-utility" (i.e. a simple apt-get install <this-package> will do the trick).
With palimpsest you can not only backups partitions of a drive (like a SD card) with a few mouse clicks, but also an entire drive (like the PI's SD card) to a file, or the other way round (for example copy that downloaded Raspbian or RISCO OS ".img" image file directly onto your SD card).
