RaspberryPi as a Jukebox machine

Tue Jan 21, 2014 3:27 pm

Hi!

I'm using an old PC with AMD Sempron 2600+ (1600 MHz) and 256 MB ram running Debian linux as a Jukebox machine in my store. After startup It is able to automatically start playing songs located in a specific folder and also download new songs from my license-song-provider over the internet and add those to the playlist.

I need the device to be quiet, fully operational and without any lags/freezes. It would be also good to have some case for the device and attached 2,5" USB external Harddrive. Is there any small box to fit everything in? Or maybe 32 GB SD card + standard Rpi case would suffice..

Provided I'll find some OS expert to install and setup the programs I need. Do you think that Raspberry Pi Model B can handle that from the hardware point of view?

By the way Is there any other small PC capable of doing such work? Just out of curiosity..

Thank you for any advice!

Hi,
almost certainly doable, and will ave on your electricty bills and noise level (other than the intended music ;) ).
You'll need to make sure your chosen software has pi compatible versions in the repository.

The fly in the ointment may be the relatively low quality of the inbuilt audio out, which you will be using if NOT using the HDMI (which is high quality). It may well be good enough for your use case though. I'd suggest trying it out - not an expensive task - to see how well it performs.

Alternatively, perhaps a higher quality USB sound card may be OK, I think they are mostly working nowadays. There were some early issues with the USB that affected mainly sound devices.

Thank you for the advices!

What about the casing for the Rpi? Is there any standard case for Rpi + 2,5 HDD?
