Firstly, please forgive my utter ignorance. I pray that you will have patience.

I recently purchased a pi and the ancillary stuff from Amazon (power cord, case, SD Card, etc). We have put the things together. When plugging the device in we don’t get the screen that Programming the Raspberry Pi book shows that we are supposed to get. Instead it has some language and then, No keyboard present – Autobooting,” etc. We got a wireless keyboard/mouse setup and have plugged it in, and the keyboard is actually able to make the curser move. So, it must have recognized the keyboard.

Anyway, all of this is to say that I am pretty confused.

BTW, we got a SD Card with the ancillary equipment. It came with a software driver disk. Do I have to download it to the SD Card, perhaps?

Hi John, Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately a "bit more info." would be useful to help diagnose your problems (and, hopefully, reduce the confusion)...
1) Could you post link(s) to the "stuff" you bought so we have a better idea of "what's in your kit" please?
2) W.r.t. the SD card - was it one "pre-loaded" with an O.S. (eg Raspbian) or the NOOBS installer perhaps? (or "something else")
3) W.r.t. the "software driver disk" - that's probably a "red herring" since the Pi neither reads(needs) CD's or uses "drivers" (in the "Windows sense" of the term "driver").
4) Can't comment on what's shown in the "Programming the Raspberry Pi book" since I haven't used that.
Meanwhile, this "news post" (http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/5563 ) might be of some help and please feel free to "rummage through my webpages" (link in sig. below) esp. w.r.t. the NOOBS installer.

Try a power supply that delivers at least 1A. Try using your wireless keyboard/mouse in a powered USB hub connected to your RPi.

ignore driver disc the writing on the screen sounds like operating system loading when it stops scrolling it should have a flashing curser if it has were it says login enter pi then password is raspberry after that you get a few lines of script were the curser is flashing try entering startx you should then get a desk top interface come up
