There's the initial alpha version, there's the "OMG we missed this" second version, the CE process, the revision to get it through that, then the first 100 out for trial, with the tweaks to the software, and the setting up of the supply chain from BOM to shop shelf, then filling the pipe line.
Somewhere in there something will go wrong, right up to the last minute.

Yeah, note there has even been a complete redesign of the B (revision 2.1) PCB, just so that some components of the B could also be used for the B+, a notable example being that revision 2.1 of the B PCB has ethernet magnetics connectors that includes holes for the two LED's, simply so that connectors could be bought to fill the "pipeline" that could be fitted on the 2.1 board as well as the B+ board!
As for the thought that the Osborne effect can be "managed", IMHO it cannot, even rumors can halt sales, and thats simply not acceptable with marges as thin as they are with PI's. Its just wishful thinking of someone that wanted a pre-anouncement.
