No HDMI Video signal on bootup

Sat Nov 30, 2013 11:00 pm

I am using and TV connected via HDMI cable to my Raspberry Pi. When I have my TV turned on and I turn on the Pi; I do get a video signal with no problems.

The problem is when I power on my Raspberry Pi and I forget to turn on my TV or forget to change to the corresponding HDMI input on my TV. I get no video. It may be my TV may not immediately notice the Pi's HDMI or may not do the negotiation. Has anyone else had this experience?

Depending upon your O.S. and the (default) settings in "config.txt" your Pi may be expecting a "hot-plug" signal from your TV. If this is not present (because the TV is "off" or not in "HDMI mode) during boot-up your Pi could be "falling back" to composite video (as to be expected).
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Trev - Thank you so much for the input. I am running Raspbian Wheezy. I do have the default settings, force hot plug etc. I went a purchased a new TV and tested the RPi before making changes to my settings and to my surprise the problem went away. Now, I can boot my RPi with my TV off and when I turn my TV on I have HDMI signal. I also tried booting up with my TV in an input other than RPi, and when I change the input to my RPi I have RPi HDMI signal.

I was using a 21" HD TV previously. I'm still curious as to why the problem was happening. I don't suggest everyone go out and purchase a new TV because of this issue though :3 I just wanted a bigger screen on which to play Emulation Station.

So to recap, my solution was purchasing a new TV and issue resolved.
